Why Social Media Is Ruining Us

This might be a known topic by all adults though us teens and children younger than us won’t fully comprehend that fact since we have been raised on the internet and most of our entertainment, hobbies, inspiration, and style comes from the internet more specifically social media.

But as time goes and the more trends and entertainments arise on our screens, the higher our dopamine levels are drawn to social media which feeds our social media addiction.

The more addicted we are to social media the less sense of reality we have and we begin to see the world in a different shape, because we would much rather escape the world by going on a screen than by escaping the screen and going into the world.

That might have sounded cliche but its so true. For example those ten year olds getting skin care products, the wanting to go on horrible diets to be like certain people, or the opposite, eating something that looks so good but is to harmful to your body, and so many more examples.

To conclude all the statistics and my own personal opinion, Social media rots a person’s brain. It not only decreases your attention span which changes peoples focus therefore affecting success.

Social media may be artistic, comedy based, etc but it changes people’s true artistic behaviors because of what is being presented to them on their screen vs what is actually going in reality.

Beyond art and the brain, social media turns people into rude being, uninteresting, and selfish people. Even though we all think we are kind and authentic people, social media is such a trend based place that gives out only certain peoples opinions which is then paced all around the world till everyone has the same opinions making everyone un-authentic and a bunch of copy and pastes.

If you dont believe anything I wrote, check your social media screen time.

AP Classes Review: World Literature

AP Literature is a crucial course most need to take for High school if you’re planning for early college credits. AP classes are rigorous classes, and the workload is heavy. In addition to classes, to get credit for college, students must take an AP exam at the end of the course.

My experience so far isn’t bad, and I’m learning more while doing it. One of the standout aspects of AP World Literature in 10th grade was the diverse selection of literary works we encountered. Our reading list spanned centuries and genres, and this variety allowed us to explore different writing styles, themes, and cultural contexts, providing a well-rounded literary education. Each work presented its unique challenges, but they all contributed to expanding our academic horizons.

The discussions in this class were vital to getting good grades. Our teacher encouraged us to analyze texts from multiple perspectives and encouraged our critical thinking. These discussions helped us grasp the intricacies of the literature and improved our communication skills. The ability to articulate and defend our interpretations was a valuable skill we will need throughout the year.

The workload is challenging, but it was worth the effort. Writing essays on complex literary topics is essential. Our teacher provided constructive feedback that will continue to help us grow as writers, and the assignments were created to delve deep into the texts.

One of the most valuable aspects of AP Literature was its ability to teach us to appreciate the subtleties of literature. We learned to uncover symbolism, dissect themes, and recognize the artistry in the writing. AP Literature is a fun but overwhelming course, so prepare for a lot of work if you decide to take it. The benefits here are that these classes prepare you for the workload and develop college-level academic skills. AP classes also look good on your transcript since they boost your GPA and save time and money from taking general college requirements. If you decide to take AP classes and love reading and writing, I highly recommend taking AP World Literature.

Before deciding, you can also check these sites for the benefits and disadvantages of AP classes.

Decadent Chocolate Chip Cookies

Say hello to one of the best chocolate chip cookie recipes you’ll ever use. This recipe uses brown butter, which elevates the cookie to be rich in flavor and more sophisticated. These cookies are great with milk!

Ingredients

1 Stick and a Half of Butter, browned

¾ Cup of Brown Sugar

⅓ Cup of Granulated Sugar

2 Tablespoons of Vanilla Extract

1 egg and 1 egg yolk, preferably room temperature

Optional: seeds of one Vanilla Bean Pod

1 ¾ Cup of All-Purpose Flour

¾ Teaspoon of Baking Soda

1 pinch of salt

1-1 ½ Cups of Chocolate Chips or Chopped Chocolate (Semi-Sweet recommended)

Instructions

  1. First, brown the butter on the stovetop at low to medium heat. Make sure to constantly stir to ensure that the butter won’t burn. The moment you see the butter turning a golden brown color, remove it from the heat and pour it into a big bowl. Allow the butter to cool in the fridge.
  1. Combine the brown butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar in a large mixing bowl. Add the vanilla extract and vanilla seeds. Then, add the egg and egg yolk.
  1. In another bowl, mix the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  1. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ones. Add the dry ingredients in increments, STOP if the dough feels dry.
  1. Finally, add the chocolate chips (or chunks). Remember–you can change the amount to as much or as little as you would like.
  1. To ensure that your cookies will taste delicious, chill them for at least an hour.
  1. After chilling the dough, preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Line your baking sheet with parchment paper and use a cookie scoop to scoop your dough. Bake for 10-12 minutes.

Cool cookies before serving and enjoy!

Fun Places to Visit in Washington D.C.

Last year, I was finally able to visit Washington D.C. with my family. My 8th grade trip was shut down by COVID, so I finally got to take the long-awaited trip that my parents promised me. There are so many things to do in D.C. that you could literally visit for weeks on end and not get bored, so it’s very important to plan your time wisely and know how to get tickets ahead of time if you need to.

Of course, you want to try to do a tour of the White House if you can. You’ll need to email your representative or house member 90 days in advance of your anticipated arrival date. It’s a lottery system, so I’d recommend sending out an email ahead of time to all of them to see who responds and follow their directions closely, which requires submission of passport or other citizenship documents. I was lucky to get a spot and it was a great tour. I even got to see the president’s dog the day I was there.  You’ll also want to visit the nearby White House Visitor Center that has a museum and lots of information about the history of the White House as well as White House Gifts which is very touristy, but a fun place to shop, nonetheless.

A trip to Washington D.C. wouldn’t be complete without visiting the National Monuments. There are a lot of them to see including the ones we all know about like the Lincoln Memorial, the Thomas Jefferson Memorial, and the World War II Memorial, but there are also a lot of other ones like the George Mason Memorial, Signer’s Memorial, D.C. Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial, MLK Memorial, and US Marine Corps War Memorial and more I probably missed. Be prepared to walk for a long, long time if you want to see most of them. Maybe do what we did and stop at Tidal Basin to rent a paddle boat and paddle around to see the Thomas Jefferson and FDR Memorials from the water. That was a great experience!

Make sure to leave a few days to see some of the exhibits in the Smithsonians as there is so much to see. I especially liked the Natural History Museum, the Air and Space Museum, and the American History Museum.

You’ll also want to visit the current government buildings like the U.S. Capitol (stop by the Capitol Café and grab a white chocolate mold that looks like the Capitol building and is filled with whipped cream and berries – one of the most fun snacks I had the entire trip), the National Archives Research Center, the Supreme Court, and the Library of Congress.  Just a little hint on the Library of Congress. If you are at least 16 years old, you can obtain your own library card and go into the actual library and look around at all of the books. It was a great experience and much more personal experience than being stuck walking through the regular pathways with everyone else. You have to plan ahead and make sure to show up the hours that are stated on their website and have the appropriate documentation, but it is well worth the extra effort. Also, if you stop by your representative’s office ahead of time, be sure to ask for galley passes which are free and allow you to sit high up above the floor and watch our government in action. I was lucky to catch a briefing on some of the upcoming votes while I was there.

After all of this touring, you’ll be really hungry, so you might also want to try out some cool restaurants like Busboys and Poets, Elephant & Castle, Shake Shack, Old Ebbitt Grill, Gordon Ramsay Fish & Chips or the original Ben’s Chili Bowl. I didn’t make it to all of these, but Ben’s Chili Bowl was especially good. It was a bit of a long Metro ride there, but was very old and had an original vibe to it. There were lots of famous people’s pictures on the walls and a video loop going showing everyone from famous actors and actresses to singers and musicians, both from a long time ago and more current times enjoying their meal there.

I hope you will find some of these spots to see in Washington D.C. as interesting as I did and that you enjoy your trip. Make sure to check the websites for every place that’s a must do on your list at least a few months before leaving, because you’ll need to make reservations and/or purchase tickets for many of the places listed above well ahead of time. It seems that the guidelines for reservations are always changing since COVID, so I’d recommend checking online for the most up-to-date information.

Happy Travels!

Most Popular Social Medias of 2023

2023, the year of technology. Where daily activities such as shopping, chatting, and reading went online and social media gained users by the masses. According to “Smart Insights,” about 61.4% of the world’s population used social media last year. So with the start of a new year and the end of a great one, it’s time to look back on some of the biggest social platforms used in 2023.

In sixth place, we have TikTok with an average of 1.1 billion monthly users. This addictive app hit 1 million users within a matter of just 200 days. The majority of its audience is 18-20 years old, but older age groups can also find entertainment in it.

At fifth we have WeChat, which is widely known in China as an “app for everything.” It has 1.33 billion monthly users. With its messaging function, video chats, games, mobile payment, location sharing and more, there’s no wonder it’s so popular!

In fourth, Instagram is a steady contestant with 2.4 billion monthly users. Most people have it as a secondary platform, though. Only 0.1% of people have Instagram as their only social media. But despite that, it’s still a great place to stay in touch with your friends!

WhatsApp is third! Because of its widespread use over 180 countries, it has about 2.78 billion monthly users. It is ranked number one as the most used messaging app in the world!

Second place is YouTube, a beloved platform for people all around the world. Users can make jobs from being content creators on YouTube. Not to mention it’s function of YouTube Shorts, which has bite-sized videos to enjoy whenever you’d like.

Finally, in first place we have Facebook. Although it has an older audience, people of all ages can enjoy it. Whether it’s seeing pictures of your grandma’s dog or your best friend’s birthday, Facebook is the go-to place for updates on people’s lives.

2024 is a new year full of new surprises. My predictions for social media will be that TikTok gains more viewers and makes it into the top 5, or maybe even top 3. Social media has come a long way, and I await its further development in the new year.

The Eras Tour – Taylor Swift (Movie/Concert Review)

This year I went to see Taylor Swift on tour and in the movie theater and it was such an amazing experience and a core memory. Here is the comparison and overall pros and cons of both!

Concert: I was looking forward to her concert for almost a year and when it reached the day, I was so excited. I got all dressed up and listened to her music in the car on the way there. The concert was a little over 3 hours long, I had floor seats which were amazing and the stage effects and dancers, backup singers, and band were great and on point! Opening acts were Gracie Abrams, who I love, and HAIM. Taylor sang a couple songs from each album in order of, Lover (6 songs), Fearless (3 songs), Evermore (5 songs), Reputation (4 songs), Speak Now (1 song), Red (4 songs), Folklore (7 songs), 1989 (5 songs), 2 Surprise Songs, and Midnights (7 songs). My favorite album is Lover but the most fun and cool one to watch at the concert, I think, was Reputation. Overall it was great and worth it and I am so grateful I got to see her live and sing along to all the songs!

Movie: The movie shows a different perspective on her concert. More close up and vivid, with showing the details of the outfits, stage effects, the crowd, and the band. It was filmed from a few of her show nights in LA. It was so fun to sing along again and relive the memories with my friends and family who couldn’t make it to the actual concert. If you bought a drink or popcorn it comes with a plastic bucket and cup of the eras tour print on it, which I got. Most people that I knew got confused about the movie, it is not as much as a biography documentary but highlighting the tour, no behind the scenes, or her life just simply the music. She had to remove 2-3 songs from the movie, to avoid it being too long. It was a little pricey and a long movie, almost 3 hours, but overall if you like Taylor Swift and know her songs I would definitely recommend, especially now that it is out on TV networks with all the additional songs included.

I would say I very much prefer the concert over the movie, it was an experience like no other, being able to see her in person and sing along with her in a place where everyone loves her, was the best! I am a big fan of Taylor Swift and very impressed with her and her music!

ALBUM REVIEW – Mammalian Sighing Reflex by Wilbur Soot

“Mammalian Sighing Reflex” (MSR) is a reference to the phenomenon known as “mammalian diving reflex” which occurs when a mammal overrides a bodily response when the body is drowning. Typically, the animal is forced to surface due to an anxiety attack, a life-sustaining action. In humans, however, this reflex can be controlled in humans.

MSR was released on Nov. 30, 2023 under Wilbur Soot, an English Indie musician, frontman for indie band Lovejoy, and Internet streamer.

Before starting his band, Soot released his first album, “Your City Gave me Asthma” in 2020, gaining immense popularity.

I’ve been a long Soot and Lovejoy fan ever since Covid, which says a lot about me. Maybe I, too, want to wallow in my misery. After listening to his new album, I’ve surrounded myself with my English text analysis skills and got to work.

**Please note that MSR contains references and/or messages about depression, suicide, and harmful topics!

Amazon Standing Lamp

The first track in Wilbur Soot’s second solo album, “Amazon Standing Lamp” entangles mental issues, loneliness and a complicated mix of emotions. The singer mourns the friends that have left his life because of his tendency to pull others into his sadness. The melody is rather delicate, the plucking of guitar strings contributing to that uncomfy, inevitable reminder that the only light left in his life is the artificial beam from the “Amazon Standing Lamp.”

Mine/Yours

“Mine/Yours” describes a breaking relationship, where the singer feels as though he isn’t good enough for his lover, as though his lover is obligated to love him. Soot’s voice breaks, but not often, as though he depicts the singer desperately attempting to hold himself together. Accompanied by a melancholic and acoustic tone, this may be the saddest song in the album, right off the bat, too.

Around The Pomegranate

“Around the Pomegranate” provides a glimpse into the singer’s emotions and desires — a yearning for stability. Additionally, the song may revolve around the death of a close friend. We all desire “normalcy” or what we perceive as normal, especially when our own lives are falling downhill. It’s perfectly alright to desire something better, a better transformation, however, acknowledging uncomfortable realities is beneficial for true healing.

Additionally, as theories go around, this song may be about Soot’s deceased friend, Technoblade, who passed away in June 2022. Many references to his friend crowd the song, such as a visit to California and standing in the summer of June.

I Don’t Think It Will Ever End

The fourth track, “I Don’t Think It Will Ever End” signifies Soot’s struggles with his role as a performer and his desire to speak about his problems. The process described in this track becomes a “figure-eight” with seemingly no end or beginning. Being a spoken track, it brings realness to his music, even if there isn’t a clear instrumental in play.

Glass Chalet

The fifth track in the album, “Glass Chalet” describes the act of reflecting. The title, “Glass Chalet” means glass house. It’s most likely a reference to the saying, “Those who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.” Typically, you’d say this when talking about the actions of a hypocrite. The singer hopes that when he throws stones, the stones will come back to hit him, therefore, he feels validated for his feelings of self-hatred.

Melatonin 130

“Melatonin 130” references the inability to cope with problems including stress and anxiety. Despite receiving advice, care, coping strategies, or “melatonin,” it doesn’t work. It doesn’t help that the singer feels trapped by the expectations of society. Surely, the singer is on top of the world, right? With a blossoming music career, why does he feel so melancholic? Themes of self-sabotage are apparent throughout the verses, as if the singer feels that he isn’t worthy of happiness.

Oh Distant You

“Oh Distant You” is the seventh track in the album. It begins with a long introduction, filled with short conversations and voices throughout, providing a sort of nostalgic feel. The singer reminisces over someone after a breakup. And while he thinks over their relationship, he regrets the way he treated her, referring to himself as “the villain.” The singer spends so much time worrying, that he forgets about the good things in their relationship and the good things in his life. Sounds familiar, right? I’m not crying, I promise.

Eulogy

Like many of the other songs, “Eulogy” imagines regret and pressure. The singer wishes he could return to simpler times, loving and living for the sake of it. It’s also speculated that the songwriter, Soot, feels pressured from touring around the world and wishes he could live a quieter life. After many failed relationships, whether with others or himself, he’s desperate to make one finally work.

Dropshipped Cat Shirt

“Dropshipped Cat Shirt” hurt me. The singer describes the same desire for a boring life, accompanied by an escalating bridge that feels more like the singer is yelling at himself. This song also features the appearance of the album title.

The Median

Soot often does not explain the meaning behind his lyrics, but he also becomes uncomfortable when others misinterpret his words. Although the song, “The Median” only has two lines, it’s similar to his previous album “Your City Gave Me Asthma” (YCGMA) in the way where his songs come from a dark place. He hopes for listeners to give up asking about YCGMA, leaving it and his negative feelings behind.

Trying Not To Think About It

The singer laments past relationships in “Trying Not To Think About It”, the penultimate track on the album. Contrary to the title, the singer begs for listeners to cherish the good feelings in our lives as it is a sentiment he can’t seem to reach in his. Though in the outro he finds love, he realizes it too late due to his lack of self-esteem. Cry? No. Sob in the shower.

10 Week Rule

Did you guess that the last track, “10 Week Rule” is about abortion? I didn’t! I thought it was about a niche relationship rule. Medicated abortions are only approved after 10 weeks of pregnancy, though I don’t think the time is very relevant. The message could be taken literally, in the sense where the singer is getting an abortion and dives into the emotions that follow, or metaphorically where the singer wants to get rid of his younger self, along with the personas and feelings throughout this album.

You can listen to this album on any streaming platform. If you want a good cry, or you’re suffering in any way, shape, or form, give “Mammalisn Sighing Reflex” a listen.

A Long Way from Chicago by Richard Peck

A Long Way from Chicago, by Richard Peck, is a Newbery Honor award-winning book. Joey and his sister, Mary Alice, are growing up in Chicago during the Great Depression. Every summer, their parents send them to the country to visit their grandmother for a week. This book is a “novel in stories,” because each chapter is about one of the annual trips to visit their grandmother. Over the course of these visits, the children gradually realize that their grandmother is a very unusual person. For example, at one point she uses her shotgun to shoot at a corpse inside a coffin. She also throws cherry bombs at kids, and she uses an illegal fish trap while fishing on a boat that she just stole, just to mention some of her zany behavior. As the years go by, the children develop an increasing level of respect and admiration for their grandmother. They come to recognize that the summers spent with their grandmother will become some of the most unforgettable experiences of their lives.

The structure of this book was new to me, because every chapter is like an entirely different story. However, the book still flowed well. It is very easy to pick up and read, and the action is fast-paced. Also, many of the stories are quite funny. Still, I was not sure what to make of the grandmother. She seems to cause quite a bit of chaos in her small community, and sometimes she lies to get out of trouble. At first, I was not sure about what the main message of this book was supposed to be. However, as I thought about it more, I realized that the charm of this book is based on the love that the grandmother has for Joey and Mary Alice. Their grandmother is very eccentric and mischievous, but she takes good care of her grandchildren and she gives them memories that they will never forget. This book is a short read, but I would recommend it to anyone.

A Long Way from Chicago by Richard Peck is available to check out from the Mission Viejo Library. It is also available to download for free from Libby.

Code Of Honor by Alan Gratz

In the beginning of the 8th grade, everybody In my English class needed to choose a book to read. And I thought that I would always hate reading, but luckily the book I chose to read was none other than Code Of Honor.

Code Of Honor is a thrilling, spy action book by Alan Gratz, a Best-selling New York Times author. This book is essentially about a young high school Senior named Kamran Smith. And Kamran had it all. He is the star of the schools football team, is dating the most popular girl, named Julia Gary, and is excited to join the United States Army, like his brother, Darius.

The story begins with Kamran Smith and his family, and They are all doing great. That was, until, Kamran’s brother Darius, is accused of being a terrorist for a character named Haydar Ansari. As soon as the public news channels said that Darius was a terrorist, Kamran’s life turned upside down. Nobody at his school liked him, his friends didn’t like him, and his girlfriend left him. And even worse, their neighbors rallied up near the Smith’s house in protest. Soon enough, government agents come to their house for questioning and house searches, and eventually take Kamran and his family into a secret underground government facility for even more interrogation. Weeks and months later, Kamran is able to sneak out of the facility. Once Kamran escaped, the guards realize and start searching for him. Right when he was about to get caught, 4 strangers who worked with the government took him into a van and saved him.

If you want to know the details and the rest of the story, I would recommend buying this book at the Mission Viejo library. Code of Honor is a book filled to the brim with lots of suspense and action, and it made me want to never put the book down. I would honestly give it a 10 out of 10 rating.

Code of Honor by Alan Gratz is available to check out from the Mission Viejo Library.

Best Hikes and Camping for the New Year

The new year has come around, and it’s a great time to get some exercise and go outdoors. A great way that I enjoy getting outdoors and getting some exercise is by going on hikes as well as going camping. There are many great spots to camp and hike in Orange County, so here are a few ones that I would recommend to start out your new year on a positive note.

  1. O’Neill Park

One of the best places in Orange County for outdoor activities is O’Neill Park. It is located in Trabuco Canyon near the foothills of the Saddleback Mountains and it has great nature and scenery. It is very easy to access and it has many great spots for camping, as well as a large variety of trails and hikes for all skill levels and ages. I personally would recommend bringing water and a snack for the longer hikes, and to try the flat trails first if you are a beginner.

2. Carbon Canyon

Another great spot for hiking and camping is in Carbon Canyon in northeastern Orange County, about 40 minutes from Mission Viejo. It is very beautiful and has a large grove of redwood trees, the only redwood trees in Southern California. It also has several good lakes for fishing, as well as great views. I would recommend the scenic nature trails in the park which are great for beginners. The park has guided hikes and many other events as well.

3. Aliso Wood Canyon Park

Aliso Wood Canyon Park is also a great place to visit. It is near Laguna Beach and it has many miles of well-maintained trails that are great even for beginners. It also has great views of the ocean and has a variety of plants and wildlife. A hike that I would suggest is to Dripping Cave, a large natural cave in the area. The hike is very flat and largely paved, and is great for everyone. Another great hike is the Top of the World hike, which is also fairly easy and has great views and scenery, however, it often gets hot especially in the summertime, so I would recommend bringing a water bottle.

4. Niguel Botanical Preserve

The Niguel Botanical Preserve, an 18-acre botanical garden in Laguna Niguel, is also a great spot for your outdoor adventures. It has an enormous variety of beautiful, well-kept plants, and it is a good place for taking a walk. It is a very short and easy walk and is very accessible and not very remote. I also saw a variety of wildlife and the preserve overall is a great spot for nature. The preserve is located on a small hill, and I would recommend hiking to the top as it has a great view. It also has many other features, such as a butterfly and rose garden and a vista overlooking the preserve. It also has a variety of rare and interesting plants and is a great activity for everyone.

These are a few of the best options for outdoor activities in Orange County for anyone who is interested in hiking or camping to start the new year. So be sure to try these fun hikes, campgrounds, and outdoor activities for yourself to kick off your new year!
