Yoshinobu Yamamoto – Command over size

Do you like the Dodgers? On the Dodgers team three Japanese players are dominating Major League Baseball and they led the Dodgers to win 2 World Series (2024, 2025). These three players are Shohei Ohtani, Roki Sasaki, and Yoshinobu Yamamoto. In this post, I’m going to write about Yoshinobu Yamamoto and why is he special.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto is baseball player who is Japanese right-handed pitcher and 2025 World Series MVP. When he played in NPB which is Japan professional baseball league, he played for Orix Buffaloes. During his time in NPB, he led the Buffaloes to a Japan Series championship in 2022 and won the prestigious Eiji Sawamura Award three consecutive times from 2021 to 2023. The Sawamura Award is considered the Japanese equivalent of MLB’s Cy Young Award, given to the best pitcher each season. Because of his dominance in Japan, Yamamoto signed a historic contract with the Dodgers, becoming one of the most highly valued pitchers in baseball history.

[ODDS and EVENS] Yoshinobu Yamamoto is Having Another Sensational Season for the Buffaloes ...

Why is Yamamoto special? First, he is an undersized player. He is only 5’10 and that is much shorter than other players. For example, Shohei Ohtani and Yu Darvish are Japanese players, but they’re 6’4 and 6’5. Despite this physical disadvantage, Yamamoto can throw a fastball reaching 98 miles per hour. Second, his pitching form is unique. Rather than using an exaggerated leg kick, his motion moves quickly and directly toward the catcher, creating excellent balance and efficiency. Lastly, his training mechanics are very unique. When you watch his training on video, you will never see on the video that he is lifting weights. He’s working out his flexibility such as bridge and headstand. And when you watch his training, you will see that he’s throwing spear. You’ve probably never seen any pitcher throw a spear in practice.

His training philosophy is equally unusual. Instead of focusing heavily on weightlifting, Yamamoto emphasizes on flexibility and body control through exercises such as bridges and headstands. He even practices spear-throwing movements to develop proper arm mechanics and energy transfer. These methods help him generate power efficiently rather than relying purely on size or strength.

Yamamoto’s intelligence on the field further separates him from other pitchers. During games, he frequently studies hitters using an iPad in the dugout, analyzing swing tendencies and identifying which pitches have the highest probability of producing a miss. He also trains his upper and lower body separately to maximize mechanical efficiency. By increasing the speed and rhythm of his delivery, he disrupts hitters’ timing and compensates for his smaller frame. His preparation demonstrates how careful study and strategic thinking can overcome physical limitations.

In a sport where height and power often dominate scouting reports, Yoshinobu Yamamoto represents a different path to success. His career suggests that precision, intelligence, and preparation can rival physical size. Command, not height, defines true pitching dominance.

Cheerleading: A sport or not?

Although, Cheer is not considered a sport by ESPN there are many reasons that cheer is a sport. Cheer should be considered a sport because it takes a lot of time and commitment, both mental and physical. Being a cheerleader, you take a whole year of your life learning a routine and putting your whole body and soul into that one routine.

There is also a chance you could get hurt being a cheerleader. Over time about 37,000 cheer-related injuries happened.

Most people think that being a cheerleader is just sitting on the sideline cheering for the football players but it’s more than that. There are competitive cheerleading teams like Pop Warner. Pop Warner is a football and cheer association for kids ages five to thirteen.

I was on the Saddleback Valley Pop Warner cheer team and overall it was a great experience. We had practices three days a week at different schools in the Saddleback Valley school district and games from August to September and competitions during the months of October to January/February. We had six competitions and we won all of them, including Pop Warner Nationals and JAMZ Cheer and Dance nationals.

Doing cheer also has a cost involved. If you do competitive cheer you have travel costs to some competitions.

In cheerleading you have to trust your team and trust that you can win or else you won’t win. You also have to push your body by doing conditioning and stretching to be able to stunt, tumble, and do jumps. Overall, as a cheerleader, you have to push your body, and be on the same team to do cheer. Cheer is an amazing sport and I hope that in reading this you are enticed to join cheer.

Allen Iverson-The small giant

Have you ever watched NBA? When you watch NBA, you will see lots of giants such as Victor Wembanyama in San Antonio Spurs, LeBron James in LA Lakers, and Giannis Antetokounmpo in Milwaukee Bucks. These guys are at least 6’8. But there were many short basketball players in NBA history especially Allen Iverson who played for Philadelphia 76ers and got MVP in 2001. In this post, I am going to talk about Allen Iverson, the small giant in NBA.

Allen Iverson was born in Hampton, Virginia, 1975. When he was a high-schooler, he played two sports, basketball and football. He was also really good at football as a quarterback. Although Iverson was so good at football, he decided to play basketball in college and scored 23 points per game. In 1996, Iverson joined NBA draft and Philadelphia 76ers selected him as the first pick. When he made a debut, a lot of fans concerned because of his small size and skinny body. But he proved his skill and capability as a result. One of the moments that showed Iverson’s fearless mentality was when he confidently faced Michael Jordan early in his career. Despite being much smaller, Iverson attacked his defender and played without hesitation, proving that confidence and skill can challenge even the greatest players. Even though Iverson became NBA star, 76ers still didn’t go to playoffs or eliminated in 1st or 2nd round because nobody helped Iverson in offense. But in 2001, Sixers became different team and they got 56 wins against 26 loses. Iverson improved again he averaged 31.1 points per game and won 2001 MVP. In 1st round, Sixers won against Indiana Pacers in 4 games but they played 7 games on 2nd round and Conference final against Toronto Raptors and Milwaukee Bucks. It made all Sixers players were exhausted. They faced LA Lakers they had Kobe Bryant and Shaq. Sixers played 7 games on 2nd round and Conference final, while Lakers went to final without losing. Many NBA fans expected Lakers will crush Allen Iverson. But in game 1, Iverson scored 48 points including 30 points in first half. Thank of his performance, Sixers defeated Lakers in overtime. Although they lost in final, his performance proved that size was not a limitation for him; instead, his confidence, skill, and competitive spirit allowed him to compete against the league’s biggest stars on the biggest stage. After 2001, his performance was still top of the NBA, but not like 2001. He played for Denver Nuggets and Detroit Pistons. In 2013, he retired.

Although some critics pointed to his field goal percentage or ball-dominant style, Allen Iverson changed the way people viewed smaller players in the NBA. In a league dominated by height and physical power, he proved that speed, skill, and fearless confidence could compete with size. His 2001 season and Final performance remain one of the most iconic moments in basketball history. Iverson did not just become a superstar — he became a symbol of belief for undersized players everywhere. That is why Allen Iverson will always be remembered as a true “small giant.”

What is Baseball IQ?

Have you ever played baseball? I am playing baseball in high school as a first baseman and pitcher. When you play baseball, you must constantly use your baseball IQ. Baseball IQ refers to how well players understand game situations, anticipate the next play, and make the right decision without overthinking. In this post, I am going to talk about baseball IQ and why it is important.

Baseball moves faster than most people realize. For example, when you are in the batter’s box and facing a 90-mile-per-hour fastball, there is no time to hesitate. If you hesitate for even a moment, it often leads to a mistake, and you will miss the pitch. Players with high baseball IQ already have a plan before the pitch is thrown. The same applies to defense. Infielders must anticipate where to throw the ball, because batters can hit the ball hard even on ground balls.

Another way to understand baseball IQ is by looking at players who are known for their intelligence on the field. For example, Greg Maddux was never the hardest-throwing pitcher, but he consistently dominated hitters by reading their tendencies and setting them up with smart pitch sequences.

Greg Maddux – Society for American Baseball Research

Mookie Betts is another strong example. He is known not only for his athletic ability, but also for his awareness of game situations, including baserunning, defensive positioning, and decision-making under pressure. These players show that baseball IQ allows athletes to succeed even when they are not relying only on speed or power. Their ability to think ahead and adjust during games separates them from average players.

Baseball IQ is what allows the game to slow down in a player’s mind. When players think ahead, communicate well, and understand situations, they make fewer mistakes and play with confidence. In a fast game like baseball, being smart is just as important as being skilled.

One of My best Stress Relievers

School can seem extremely overwhelming. Some days, I get extremely lucky, and I have little to no homework, but other days, I can have tons of upcoming tests, or assignments/projects due soon. Between school work, tests, and activities, it is extremely easy to feel stressed or burned out. When this happens, I think that doing some form of exercise really helps reset someone’s mind. For me personally, baseball and going to the gym helps my mental health a lot.

As a student, there seems like there is always pressure to keep up. Grades matter, time feels limited, and it can feel like I can never catch a break. Stress builds up faster than people realize. As a student in high school, it feels like there is so much pressure on every decision I make and how it might impact my future and my career.

Baseball helps me slow down and focus. When I am on the field or in the batter’s box, I’m not thinking about assignments or deadlines. I’m only focused on the next pitch, the next play, and being present in the moment. As a teen, playing sports clears your head and teaches you discipline and patience. Although, at times, there may be extremely frustrating moments while playing sports, it pushes one to get better and improve as a player and as a person.

Going to the gym helps in a different way. Lifting weights allows me to relieve stress physically. After a workout, I feel calmer, more confident, and more prepared to handle challenges at school. I recommend that everybody should try to consistently get in the gym. If you workout 3-5 times a week, you can notice some results pretty fast both physically and mentally. Going to the gym improves focus after studying and boosts one’s confidence.

Everyone handles stress differently. For me, baseball and the gym are perfect ways to protect my mental health while staying active. Finding something that helps you reset, whether it being sports, music, or journaling, can make a huge difference in someone’s life.

How Did South Korea Host the 1988 Olympics?

From September 17 to October 2, 1988, the 24th Summer Olympics were held in Seoul, South Korea. Today, South Korea is a wealthy country well known for K-pop, K-food, and K-beauty. However, in the 1980s, it was still a developing nation. Its economy was not strong enough to host a global sporting event, and the country did not even have proper Olympic stadiums. At the time, Japan was expected to host the 1988 Olympics in Nagoya, since it was far wealthier than South Korea.

In the late 1970s, then-president Park Chung Hee strongly supported hosting the Olympics. The government believed the event could help improve South Korea’s economy and prove that the country was capable of hosting a major international event. Under President Park’s leadership, Chung Ju-yung, the chairman of the Hyundai Group, led a delegation to persuade members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The delegation traveled to Baden-Baden, West Germany, and first met IOC members in London.

During these meetings, Chairman Chung argued that Japan was already a wealthy nation and that hosting the Olympics again would further accelerate its economic growth. This statement drew attention from IOC members, especially because Britain’s economy was competing with Japan’s at the time. As a result, many wealthy countries, including the United States and European nations, became wary of Japan’s growing economic power.

In the final presentation, Japan confidently delivered its proposal in Japanese with the help of translators. In contrast, South Korea presented entirely in English, showcased detailed stadium plans, and demonstrated its ability to host the Games without major errors. This strong impression influenced the final decision. In the final vote, Seoul won 52–27, becoming the host city of the 1988 Olympics.

However, not everyone welcomed the decision. North Korea opposed South Korea hosting the Olympics and attempted to disrupt the event through acts of terrorism, including a plane bombing. Despite these threats, South Korea continued its preparations and ultimately successfully hosted the Olympics.

Thanks to the 1988 Olympics, South Korea gained global recognition. This moment is often described by the slogan “세계는 서울로, 서울은 세계로,” which means “The world came to Seoul, and Seoul opened itself to the world.” After the Games, South Korea’s economy grew rapidly. A country once devastated by the Korean War in 1950 became a nation capable of hosting the Olympic Games within just a few decades. As of 2026, South Korea’s economy ranks 12th in the world among 197 countries.

Sports and Mental Health: A Double Edged Sword

The relationship between sports and mental health can not be simplified down to any single factor. The toxic, destructive atmosphere of a sports team is often masked by the ‘friendly competition’ persona.

Often the problem lies in the coaches immaturity and deep desire to win above all else. Grown adults are willing to trash a child’s mental health in the name of the game. While sports can create a strong sense of community among athletes, this mutual support is often dismantled by the relentless expectations set by coaches.

“There’s nothing to lose in practice” is a phrase no athlete is a stranger to, but do not fall into its trap. One bad practice can easily prompt excessive punishments or a loss in playing time. Coaches have no trouble dismissing all an athlete’s hard work and accumulation of excellent performances to validate their dramatic penalization for one off day. Players are expected to exhibit peak athleticism and skill on a daily basis. Coaches fail to recognize the psychological and emotional challenges faced by teenagers in today’s high-pressure society. The media pushes unrealistic standards, convincing young individuals that success is contingent upon being physically attractive, thin yet not excessively so, socially popular, and academically accomplished. Maintaining this lifestyle, while being committed to a sports team is virtually impossible, for those planning to maintain a healthy mental state.

This is not to imply that sports are some nefarious force designed to cause harm to teenagers. Any form of physical activity can prompt the release of endorphins, diminishing feelings of anxiety and immense sadness. High schoolers facing intense stress can take advantage of sports, as a temporary relief from the stressors that plague their mind. The blissful focus required to engage in sports provides a mental break and increased mindfulness. Amidst the intensity of athletic endeavors, athletes rarely have their minds clouded by thoughts of an impending math test.

Though an excessive focus on competition may give rise to anxiety and diminish self-esteem, it can also equip athletes with the resilience needed to navigate the challenges of life. There is no escaping setbacks, failures, and high-pressure situations, so being exposed to them early in a controlled environment can serve individuals in the long run. This is not a justification of cruel coaches, but rather a recognition of the possibility to learn coping mechanisms when faced with healthy competition. Positive stress exists and sports can serve as a form of positive stress. Positive stress exists and can arise through sports, acting as a spark for personal growth and the cultivation of inner strength.

Sports, just like anything, contain both positive and negative aspects. Children should not shy away from sports entirely, in fear of harming their mental health. Instead, they should remain mindful of the amount of competition and pressure they are consuming. Those looking into joining sports as a form of self care, approaching it as a leisurely pursuit may offer the most beneficial balance. Even those seeking a professional career in athletics should not dismiss their mental health, as neglecting it can diminish their natural passion and drive.

March Madness 2025

Each March, the NCAA holds a tournament to determine which division 1 program will hold the title of national champion for both men’s and women’s collegiate basketball. This phenomenon is called March Madness. The name stems from the unpredictable nature of a 68-team single elimination bracket in which any team has a chance to win it all.

Basketball Hoop Wallpapers - Wallpaper Cave

The NCAA selection committee ranks who they believe to be the top 68 teams and splits them into four regions with the regional champions playing each other in what is known as the Final Four. Most of the time, there are one or two major Cinderella stories with low ranked teams making it to the later rounds of the tournament. However, this year both the men’s and women’s brackets have been extremely uneventful. In the men’s bracket the four highest ranked teams have advanced to the Final Four and the women’s bracket would have seen the same fate if it weren’t for #2 seed UCONN beating #1 seed USC. USC was hindered by the recent loss of one of their star players, JuJu Watkins, to a torn ACL earlier in the season.

I filled out a bracket of my own and lost my chances of a perfect bracket on the first day of the tournament. On the bright side, Houston, the team I picked to win it all in the men’s bracket, is still alive as of now. I am going to stick with them as my pick to win the men’s bracket. However, before they make it to the championship they will have to go through Cooper Flagg, one of the top prospects in the upcoming NBA draft, and the rest of the Duke Blue Devils. On the other side of the bracket Auburn out of the South and Florida out of the West will be playing for the other spot in the championship. The women’s bracket features Texas versus South Carolina and UCONN versus UCLA. I think that Paige Bueckers will help lead UCONN to win the national championship. Sports fans can only hope that next March will have more madness than this one did.

Water Polo: The Best Sport

I freaking love this sport. Being in the water with your friends is great and all, but add that to mostly unfriendly competition: it’s amazing. Do be warned though, this sport is not for the faint of heart. You have to be prepared to get down and dirty, but if you enjoy being in the water and winning, this is the sport for you.

Originally created in Scotland, this sport began as a demonstration of strength and skill. With its fast paced game and enthusiastic crowd, this sport became a crowd pleaser at country fairs throughout Great Britain. Men’s water polo was even among the first introduced to the Olympics in the year 1900. But, who really wants to know the history of a sport: let’s get into the fun stuff.

There are two teams of 7 players on the field (in the pool) at any given time. This game has 4 quarters where they try to score on the other team’s cage. Think like soccer, two teams trying to score. Each team has 6 field players, a goalkeeper, and subs. The field players swim up and down the pool throughout the game, playing both offense (scoring) and defense (stopping the other team from scoring). Both teams also have a center, or a set, who is the main offensive player. They are up against the center defender, the main defensive player. As the game progresses, the field players switch positions and apply strategies to get the advantage. The team with the most goals in the end wins!

This is a terrific sport for teamwork. Because there are so few players in the game at a time, they must communicate. Furthermore, you can’t shoot the ball if you don’t have the ball, so your teammates have to pass the ball around to get the best opportunity.

Joining this water polo was one of the best decisions of my life. I have made some of my closest friends through this sport and feel like I finally found people who get me. I really recommend this sport for people who don’t feel like they fit in and just want to have fun.

Also, if you have unresolved anger issues, join water polo. It’s a great, healthy way to let out your anger by kicking people in the stomach.

2025 NFL Combine

At the end of the NFL season, fans look forward to the prospect of improved player rosters through the NFL draft.  The NFL draft involves NFL teams selecting eligible college players to their teams with the order of the teams being determined by the teams’ records from the previous season.  One tool the NFL coaches and scouts use to determine which college prospects will be the best fit for their team is the NFL combine. The NFL combine is the annual event held in Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the Indianapolis Colts, for football players attempting to be drafted to show what they can do in a series of fitness tests specific to their position.

2025 NFL Combine logo | Sports | virginislandsdailynews.com

This year’s NFL combine will take place from February 27th to March 2nd with different positions competing each day.  Some of the players that are projected first round picks in this year’s draft are Cam Ward, Shedeur Sanders, Abdul Carter, Travis Hunter, and Ashton Jeanty. Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders are quarterbacks from Miami and Colorado respectively.  Abdul Carter is an edge rusher from Penn State who many people regard as the top prospect in the draft. Ashton Jeanty is Boise State’s breakout running back with 1,376 rushing yards and 18 rushing touchdowns in his 2024 season.  Finally, Travis Hunter won the Heisman trophy after being the best two-way player in recent history as Colorado’s star cornerback and receiver. Unfortunately for fans who want to see these players in action, many of them will not actually participate in the combine in order to avoid possible injury.

Prospects will have their height, weight, and wingspan measured, complete fitness drills, and conduct interviews with coaches and general managers interested in drafting them.  My favorite drills to watch are the 40-yard dash and the bench press.

The Tennessee Titans currently hold the first overall pick in the draft. The Titans have many viable candidates to draft. Alternatively, they could trade this pick to another team.  I believe that the TItans will keep this pick and draft either Abdul Carter or Cam Ward, depending on whether they decide to stick with Will Levis at the quarterback position, acquire someone through a trade or free agent signing, or pick a replacement in the draft.  The NFL combine will be the determining factor for many teams like the Titans when deciding who will be the future of their franchise. For football fans like me, it’s exciting to watch this process play out.
