About BH

I'm a passionate teen blogger. Join me on my literary journey, where the magic of words awaits!

The Land of Stories: The Wishing Spell By Chris Colfer

I read a lot when I was younger and remember many great literary classics. But the book I remember most fondly is The Land of Stories by Chris Colfer.

The series consists of six books and follows the adventures of Alex and Conner Bailey, who find themselves teleported to a magical world through a strange storybook. It was always my favorite book to escape from when I needed a break from reality.

The plot of The Land of Stories: The Wishing Spell is fun and engaging! Colfer created a wonderful world of magic and wonders with many compelling characters. The characters are well-developed, with distinct personalities and motivations. The story keeps readers hooked with twists and turns, making it difficult to put the book down.

The book revolves around themes of friendship and the power of imagination. Through the characters’ experiences, the novel promotes the values of kindness, courage, and perseverance. For instance, Alex and Conner’s journey to find the Wishing Spell is not only a physical one but a mental one. They learn to trust their instincts and rely on each other, which ultimately helps them succeed in their quest. Their bond as siblings also grows, shown throughout a couple of books.

While The Land of Stories: The Wishing Spell is entertaining, it can sometimes be predictable. Some story elements may need to be more complex for older readers. Still, it may have been intentional since the series is aimed at younger readers. The book relies heavily on familiar fairy tale characters and settings, which may appeal to only some readers. It is generally intended for younger readers from fourth to seventh grade. It may not be for everyone, and that’s okay!

Finally, The Land of Stories: The Wishing Spell is a well-written and engaging novel exploring family, friendship, and imagination themes. The characters are well-developed, and the plot is full of surprises that will keep the reader wanting more. While the book may be predictable at times and may not appeal to all readers, it is an excellent choice for young readers who enjoy fantasy and fairy tales! The Land of Stories: The Wishing Spell is a fantastic read. I highly recommend it!

The 39 Clues: The Maze of Bones

I have many favorite book series, but The 39 Clues is the best.

If you are a bookworm like me, you’ll know what I’m talking about regarding your favorite books. The book series, The 39 Clues, is an exciting adventure action pack that hooked me from the first page.

The first book in the series is The Maze of Bones, written by the talented author Rick Riordan. It is filled with action from start to finish.

It all began when their grandmother, Grace Cahill, was very sick and dying. Minutes before she passed away, Grace changed her will, leaving her descendants a new will with an impossible decision. They have two choices- take one million dollars or a clue from the 39 clues to an immense fortune and power. The Cahills were the world’s most influential family. The most well-known or influential people in the world are related to the Cahills, like Napoleon, Houdini, and even Mark Twain are all Cahills.

Amy and Dan Cahill are two ordinary kids who suddenly find their family secrets- The 39 Clues. There are also super secrets and ancient societies. And some of their family members will stop at nothing to become the most influential people on earth.

In this first book, The Maze of Bones, Amy, Dan, and their cousin Jonah dive headfirst into a whirlwind adventure that takes them worldwide. Their mission? To uncover the 39 clues that will lead them to a unique serum with world-changing powers. The hunt is on, and these kids are at the center to discover the Cahill family secrets.

The Maze of Bones is a worthwhile read, packed with action, adventure, family loyalty, and love. You’ll be on the edge of your seat as the plot’s unexpected ending will take you on a rollercoaster of suspense and action. It’s a non-stop, exhilarating read that’ll keep you past bedtime. It did me all summer of my middle school years.

The characters set The Maze of Bones apart. Amy and Dan are relatable characters, typical kids like us, and you’ll find yourself cheering them on every step of the way.

The plot surprises and clever puzzles will challenge your brain to solve them before the characters in the book do.

So, if you’re in the mood to read an adventure mystery book, I highly recommend The 39 Clues: The Maze of Bones for you. It’s an absolute page-turner and you will experience all the actions and adventures alongside these relatable characters and feel like you are solving the clue yourself. So buckle up and prepare yourself for a non-stop action-solving experience with Amy and Dan that will capture your imagination as they navigate a world full of secrets, where each decision means victory or defeat.

Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard: The Sword of Summer By Rick Riordan

Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard: The Sword of Summer is a young adult fantasy novel by famous author Rick Riordan. Magnus Chase, a homeless teenager who discovers that he is the son of a Norse god, embarks on a dangerous quest to stop Ragnarok, the end of the world.

At the beginning of the book Magnus runs away from his uncle’s home and lives on the streets of Boston. After monsters attacked him and Magnus narrowly escaped these beasts, he discovered his true heritage: Magnus is the son of Frey, the Norse God of Fertility and Agriculture.

He meets other Norse gods and heroes in Valhalla, the hall for fallen heroes.
The plot revolves around Magnus and his friends’ quest to retrieve the Sword of Summer, a powerful weapon that can stop Ragnarok. As the story progress, they face several challenges and obstacles, including battling monsters and navigating through different realms of the Norse mythological world.

This book is well-developed and has relatable characters. Magnus is a likable and sarcastic protagonist, and his interactions with his friends, including Samirah, a Muslim Valkyrie, and Hearthstone, a deaf elf, provide insightful perspectives about Norse mythology. The character’s diversity in the book is refreshing and adds depth to the story.

Riordan’s writing style is humorous, witty, engaging, and enjoyable to read. The story’s pacing is also well-done, balancing action scenes and quieter moments of character development.

If you read other Riordan’s books, the plot may be familiar with his previous works, such as the Percy Jackson series. Some of the plot twists may also be predictable for readers who are familiar with Norse mythology. Additionally, the book’s ending may feel rushed and unsatisfying to some readers.

Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard: The Sword of Summer is well-written and entertaining and appeals to fans of Rick Riordan’s previous works and anyone interested in Norse mythology. The relatable characters, engaging writing style, and unique perspective on Norse mythology make it a worthwhile read. This book is available on Libby and at the Mission Viejo Library.

Let’s Make Sushi: Easy Recipe to Try at Home!

Sushi is one of the most popular foods in our country, and I love to eat it every day if I could. It’s one of the most nutritious foods because of the combination of ingredients used to make sushi. Also, it’s not deep fried, so there’s no worry about cholesterol or fat. Sushi is delicious and nutritious; each sushi roll includes high-quality protein (fish or caviar). We all need protein for repairing and rebuilding tissues, muscles, and everything else in our body. Fish is rich in omega-3 fatty acids essential for the brain and heart. Also, it helps in the reduction of inflammation and lower chronic diseases. All the vegetable in sushi provides abundant mineral and vitamins necessary for overall health.
So what are we waiting for? Let’s make a sushi roll together and see why every kid should have sushi once in their lifetime.
First, gather all your ingredients. Here is what you need:

  • 2 cups of cooked sushi rice, aka short grain rice cooked; follow the directions on the rice’s box.
  •  4-6 sheets of seaweed (raw or roasted)
  •  4 -6 oz smoked salmon
  •  1 small cucumber sliced into long sticks
  •  1 medium carrot cut into small finger-size sticks.
  •  1 Avocado sliced.
  • Caviar for topping (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon Rice vinegar

Instruction:

1. Cook the short-grain rice according to the instructions on the box.

2. Once cooked, add 1 tablespoon of rice vinegar to the rice and

 stir to incorporate.

3. Lay a sheet of nori seaweed on a bamboo sushi mat with the shiny side facing down.

4. Spread a thin layer of cooked rice evenly over the nori sheet leaving about an inch at the top uncovered.

5. Layer smoked salmon, cucumber, carrot, and avocado on the rice.

6. Use the bamboo mat to roll the seaweed like you roll up the sleeping bag; the tighter, the better. Starting from the bottom end.

7. Use a sharp knife and cut about an inch per piece or the size that fits perfectly in your mouth. Top with caviar if you want more omega or just want to be fancy.

Now, enjoy your hard-earned labor!

The Bone Witch By Rin Chupeco

Tea is an outcast in her village because of her TODA – a feared magic type. Tea didn’t want to be a Bone witch, but her powerful magic couldn’t be denied. After she accidentally raises her brother from death, Tea discovers she is destined to be the dark Asha, the one everyone dreaded and feared.

The Bone Witch is a nested story with vivid, detailed world-building and well-drawn characters. Tea, the protagonist, is particularly compelling. Throughout the book, you can see that her relationship with other characters, like her mentor and brother, is rich and complex. Their dynamics are often surprising and unexpected. Chupeco crafted and weaved magic and exquisite details in every chapter, making the readers want more. The other bone witches’ unique abilities and personalities are fascinating to learn about and add depth and complexity to the story.

The plot of The Bone Witch is fast-paced and full of twists and turns. Chupeco does an excellent job of keeping you guessing and building tension throughout the story. There are moments of heartbreak and triumph, and the ending leaves you eager to learn more about Tea and her world.

The Bone Witch is worth checking out for fantasy fans and anyone looking for an exciting, immersive read with a cliffhanger ending. It’s a good read for readers in seventh grade and up. The Bone Witch is available to borrow on Libby, and last I checked at Mission Viejo Library.

Rin Chupeco’s world characters are memorable, and her world-building skills are top-knot; an exciting and intricate world filled with unique characters and a gripping plot. I am looking forward to reading more of this author’s series!

Fun Weekend Trips in California

California has an incredible diversity of experiences, from breathtaking natural wonders and great hikes to buzzing urban centers and famous museums. With so much to do and see, planning is the key to utilizing this majestic state, so you don’t feel overwhelmed. But fear not. A short weekend trip to California is still possible. You can take a few days packed with adventure and fun. Here are a few ideas for a quick getaway that will refresh and inspire your senses.

Let’s start with my favorite place Universal Studio. It’s located in Hollywood, an amusement park perfect for all ages, even adults. The park features rip-roaring rides, exciting shows, and attractions based on the most popular movies and TV shows, such as Harry Potter, The Simpsons, and Jurassic World. Everyone will love the adrenaline rush of roller coaster rides like Jurassic World and The Revenge of the Mummy. Growing up reading all the Harry Potter series, my favorite is the Harry Potter attraction.

After a fun morning at the park, head to Santa Monica Pier, a historic landmark that has much entertainment and had been entertained visitors for over 100 years. The attractions include an amusement park, an aquarium, and an arcade. The Ferris wheel or the roller coaster rides are electrifying. If rides are not your thing, try your luck at one of the carnival games. Beware, set a budget, and stop playing if you’re not winning. They tend to hook you in, so you’ll lose more than win.

End your day with a stroll along Venice Beach, a lively and diverse neighborhood famous for its colorful street performers, artists, and vendors. Stop and take a breather while watching the sunset over the Pacific Ocean and enjoy dinner at one of the many restaurants with ocean views in the area.

Another favorite of mine is Legoland. This park is all about kids and fun. It has over 60 rides, shows, attractions, a water park, and an aquarium. Everything is built with Legos. And who doesn’t like Legos.

My favorite ride is Lego Technic, and Lego Mind Storm is my favorite attraction.
If you are still up for traveling north of California. I suggest San Francisco, City by the Bay. This is a must-see destination. The unique culture, history, and natural beauty mix is eye candy for everyone.

You can experience the city’s most well-known and iconic sites like the Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman’s Wharf, and Alcatraz Island. While you’re there, remember to stop by and sample some of the most famous sourdough bread in the city. If you have time, take a scenic ferry ride to Sausalito, a charming town across the Bay with impressive views of San Francisco.

With so many more options and destinations, you will be satisfied if you choose any of the above. But those aren’t your cup of tea; visit your family destination guide online for more quick trips in California.

Here’s to the adventure ahead!

Genshin Impact

I’ve been playing Genshin Impact for a year, and I learned this. Genshin Impact is a free-to-play open-world action role-playing game developed by miHoYo. The game has gained a massive following since released in September 2020.

The game’s story revolves around Teyvat; players take on the role of a traveler who sets out to explore the vast world. Along the way, they encounter new characters and solve mysteries surrounding the seven elemental gods.

The stunning visuals in Genshin Impact are striking, and it’s one reason it attracted so many players. The world is colorful and vibrant. The developer uses cel-shaded art style, aka anime, bringing it to life, making the player feel like they are in a living anime world. The impressive details in the game’s environment and the characters’ designs make this game fun to watch. The game’s visual effects during combat scenes are entertaining to watch.

Genshin Impact is both engaging and challenging. Players must be skillful in using elemental attacks, dodges, and skill usage to defeat enemies and progress through the game’s story. Each character has unique abilities and elemental affinities that can be combined for catastrophic effects.

The game’s world with multiple regions to explore, and each comes with many challenges, puzzles, and enemies. The game’s quests and side missions are exquisite, with interesting flawless characters to interact with and uncover stories.

Every game has its downsides, and this game is no different. One of the game’s downsides is its gacha system, which randomly turn-off for some players. Players progress through Genshin by acquiring new characters and weapons, which can be obtained through the game’s gacha system and grinding for in-game currency. A player can still play the game without spending any money.

Genshin Impact is an impressive game with a lot of content for its free-to-play model. The stunning visuals, engaging gameplay, and the big world make it worth checking out for any RPG fan. Be forewarned, this game can be addicting, and you might want to set a limit when playing, so you don’t waste your whole day doing nothing but gaming.

Happy Gaming!

Learning on your own terms: the benefits of homeschooling as a teen

There are several reasons why I prefer homeschooling over traditional schooling. Some of these include:

  1. Flexibility: Homeschooling can provide more flexibility in scheduling, which can appeal to some teens with other interests or responsibilities. For example, I can write my novels any time as long as I finish all my weekly high school requirements. I can also dual enroll with a university or college, finish high school, and get college credits.
  2. Personalized education: Homeschooling allows for more personalized instruction. This means I can cater my education to my interests and needs rather than following a one-size-fits-all curriculum. Because I get to choose my curriculum with my teacher, I almost always have no problems finishing my schoolwork quickly.
  3. Avoidance of negative social situations: Some teens may prefer homeschooling to avoid adverse social problems such as bullying, peer pressure, or a lack of inclusion. I never had this problem; most homeschooled high students I met or knew were too busy with their day-to-day lives. Most of the time, we’re with older adults, so there are no such adverse social problems.
  4. Increased family time: One of the advantages of homeschooling is that it can provide more opportunities for family time and closer bonds between parent and child. I like homeschooling because I can spend time with my siblings whenever I want or need to. When my family decides to travel, I can take my schoolwork with me, and there are no missed school days to make up. This is a huge perk for my parents and me since we love to travel.
  5. Religious or philosophical beliefs: Many families homeschool because it aligns better with their religious or philosophical beliefs and values. I have many friends who homeschool for this reason. It’s important to families that their children receive an education that aligns with their ideas. Because we’re living in the US, we have the freedom to choose; we all should take advantage of how we want to do school to improve ourselves as model citizens.

It’s worth noting that homeschooling is only for some, and this form of education can also be challenging and complex. The most difficult in homeschooling is being motivated and disciplined with your schedule. You are on your own when finishing and staying on task with your schoolwork. No teachers ask you to do it and finish it on time. No classmates to compete and get you going. No- just you competing against yourself to be the best version of yourself. This is why I love homeschooling, but many teens choose not to. However, for some teens like myself, homeschooling can provide an excellent choice and preferred educational experience.

Your Words Have Power

What would we do without words? Words are powerful; They can inspire, motivate, and move us to action. They can also hurt, insult, and destroy. As teenagers, we are constantly bombarded with words from many different sources, from our peers to parents, teachers, or the media. Recognizing that our words have power and can influence us in how we communicate is important. We can see the power of words play out through books and movies. Numerous examples of films and books can resonate with us and strengthen the impact of words.

Dead Poets Society is one example of how words impact us. In this movie, an unorthodox English teacher inspires his students to be themselves and embrace their individuality. He encourages them to express themselves through poetry. Robin William, who played the teacher in the movie, tells his students to “carpe diem,” meaning seize the day and live life to the fullest. Through words, he profoundly impacts his students’ actions. They challenge the school district rules and go on to pursue their own passions. This movie is a compelling reminder that our words have power. Words of encouragement can inspire and move us forward to do great things that impact many lives.

The Hate U Give, written by Angie Thomas, also shows us how words impact how we think in a powerful way. Starr, a young girl in the story, witnesses the shooting of her friend by a police officer. The author uses words to shape our perceptions of others and strongly influences how we think about racism and prejudice. It encourages us to use our words to create positive changes in our world.

These are just a few examples of the power of words and how they shape our actions, thoughts, and interaction with people around us.

We are constantly bombarded with words from everyone and everything.

As teenagers, we have the power to use our words to bring positive changes to others and the world around us. Use words that encourage and inspire others rather than break them down. Stand up and speak out against hateful language and attitudes.

Our words cannot be underestimated. Words inspire, motivate, and move us to action. It can also hurt, insult, and destroy others. By recognizing the impact of our words, we can use them responsibly to create lasting and positive impacts. Doing so can create a more positive and inspiring communication culture in our society. Maybe, it can even lessen the chances of war.

The next time you have a conversation with someone, remember your words have power; what you say can uplift or tear a person down. You have the choice to inspire and encourage others so you can help create a better world. Choose your words wisely so you can inspire.
