Concussions

Concussions can occur anytime, anyplace. They can range from a mild headache and nausea to being severely knocked unconscious for minutes straight.

Some signs of a concussion include headaches, feeling pressure in your head, dizziness, disorientation, nausea, etc. If you recently suffered a sudden jolt to your head and experience these symptoms, seek medical assistance immediately.

Concussions were first separately recognized in the medical field when, in the 900s, Persian physician Abu Bakr al-Razi, made a distinction between concussions and severe traumatic brain injuries. Three hundred years later in the 13th century, Lanfrancus, also known as Lanfranc of Milan, an Italian surgeon, was the first to define this injury as a brain “commotion.” In the 16th century, French physician Ambroise Paré coined the term “commotio cerebri,” which, in Latin, directly translates to “shaking of the brain”. As time passed and medical technology and knowledge advanced, concussions were more studied.

To this day, concussions are still an extremely dominant type of injury in many different medical fields, especially sports medicine. Every year, around 3.8 million concussions occur solely from sports-related injuries. Additionally, an estimated 5-10% of all athletes experience a concussion in any given season of a sport, most of which go undiagnosed without treatment. The most concussion-prone sports include rugby, ice hockey, American football, lacrosse, and soccer.

Books about concussions are available to check out from the Mission Viejo Library.

The Fascinating Truth Behind Common Superstitions

From lucky charms and talismans to four-leaf clovers, try your luck with these rational stories and learn the reason why we believe in these superstitions. Irrational as they might be, we all believe at least one or even two superstitions, and some of us even use them daily to avoid bad luck.

So here we go, why do we have these intriguing superstitions in our daily lives, even if we don’t even think about them. From the common ones we all know about to the unorthodox ones that might surprise you, superstitions are like little rays of unexpected sunshine or folklore passed down through generations, shaping our beliefs and behaviors in ways we might not even realize. Whether you’re a firm believer, a skeptic, or somewhere in between, let’s dive in and explore stories behind these age-old superstitions that continue to sprinkle a bit of magic into our lives.

Have you ever wondered why opening the umbrella inside is considered bad luck?

This superstition comes from Egyptian and Roman folklore, where umbrellas were initially used to protect people from the scorching sun. They believed that opening the umbrella indoors was seen as a sign of disrespect to the sun god, Ra.

It’s also practical; opening an umbrella inside could knock over objects or hurt someone because of the small space.

Regardless of its origins, this superstition has persisted through years and generations, with many people still believing it today without even questioning why. Next time you reach for your umbrella inside, consider the superstitions and customs that have led to this interesting tradition.

Another superstition you hear people often say is  “Knocking on wood to avoid jinxing.” This has its roots in ancient pagan beliefs and rituals. The practice originated among ancient European cultures, where trees were considered sacred and believed to be inhabited by spirits or gods. People commonly touch or knock on trees to invoke the protection of spirits or gods, especially when expressing gratitude for good luck or seeking to ward off evil spirits. This superstition is still popular all around the world today. People continue to knock on wood reflexively in moments of optimism or to counteract any perceived negative influence that might jeopardize a positive outcome.

Another popular superstition is the one about the black cat. This superstition surrounding black cats crossing paths came from various cultural beliefs and historical associations. In ancient Egyptian religion, black cats were considered sacred and believed to bring good luck, but this perception changed over time. During the Middle Ages, the Europeans believed black cats were associated with witchcraft and evil spirits, so encountering one could bring misfortune.

Despite where these folklore and superstition came from, many still believe that crossing paths with a black cat can bring bad luck. This idea has persisted through generations and influences how some perceive these animals. However, it’s essential to remember that superstitions are not based on factual evidence and should not dictate our interactions with animals or choices in life. I personally love cats, so I refused to believe this superstition. It’s essential to appreciate black cats for their beauty and unique qualities rather than fear them based on unfounded beliefs.

What about Lucky charms and talismans? These have a rich history that dates back to ancient civilizations worldwide. From the Egyptian Eye of Horus to the Celtic four-leaf clover, these symbols have been used for centuries to bring luck and ward off evil spirits. People believe in these objects’ power because they offer comfort and control in uncertain situations.

Lucky charms and talismans are rooted in the human desire for protection and positive energy. Whether you want to carry a rabbit’s foot or wear a protective amulet, these items provide a tangible connection to something greater than ourselves. While some may dismiss them as mere superstition, many continue to find comfort in knowing they have their lucky charms by their sides.

Belief in lucky charms and talismans transcends cultural boundaries, highlighting our universal need for faith, positivity, and a higher power. In a world of uncertainty, these symbols remind us of our innate resilience and ability to overcome challenges with grace and strength.

What about the belief that Spilling salt brings bad luck?

Have you ever hesitated to pass the salt shaker across the table for fear of bringing bad luck upon yourself? This belief has its roots in ancient superstitions and folklore too. The famous origin story dates back to the Last Supper, where Judas Iscariot is said to have spilled salt, leading to his betrayal of Jesus.

Salt holds significant symbolism and is often associated with purity and protection in many cultures worldwide. Salt was a valuable commodity in ancient times, and spilling it was considered wasteful. This idea evolved into believing that spilling salt would anger gods or spirits and attract evil spirits. While many may dismiss this superstition as a myth, some still believe in it.

Whether you believe in the powers of spilled salt, it’s fascinating how a simple act can carry such significance through history. Next time you spill some salt, take a moment to reflect on its cultural importance and remember that sometimes old superstitions can offer intriguing insights into our collective beliefs and traditions.

What about paraskevidekatriaphobia? The fear of Friday the 13th. This belief has its roots in ancient and modern cultural influences. This fear can be traced back to various cultures and traditions. One was the Last Supper when Judas Iscariot was guest number 13. The number 13 is considered unlucky in numerous cultures, making this Phobia even worse.

People believe in this superstition because it provides a sense of control over unpredictable events. We feel more prepared for potential misfortune on Friday the 13th by associating negative occurrences with a specific date. This belief is maintained through media portrayals as accursed, creating a self-fulfilling prophecy for some who dread its arrival. Despite the irrational reason to continue believing in superstition, this fear persists due to its embedded nature within societal beliefs and traditions.

Next time, when Friday the 13th comes, remember that it’s just another Friday; luck is what we make of it, and a number does not dictate it.

Finally, the last infamous superstition, Breaking a Mirror, is often associated with seven years of bad luck, but have you ever wondered why seven exactly? Some believe it stems from ancient Rome, where mirrors were rare and costly, so breaking one was seen as a significant loss. This superstition reminds us of the importance of material possessions and how deeply superstitious beliefs can influence our actions.

Superstitions continue to play a role in our lives that we might not even consider. From harmless rituals or traditions to deeply ingrained beliefs, superstitions add a touch of magic and mystery to our daily routines. These age-old superstitions had withstood the test of time. Next time you catch yourself or someone else crossing your fingers, knocking on wood, or saving a 7-leaf clover, take a moment to appreciate the folklore and magic of the age-old superstitions that have traveled through time. Continue exploring the stories behind these beliefs- you never know what unforeseen circumstances, insights, or connections you might discover!

Best National Parks

Over the years, my family has visited many national parks. Below you’ll find a small list of my favorite parks (worst to best).

5) Arches National Park

I visited this park in the year 2021, during the summer. Arches is located in Utah, near the town of Moab. This national park is gorgeous and full of hikes that range in mileage and difficulty. I liked this park because the arches were huge in size–I’ve never seen arches that beautiful and colossal. Some other pros about this park are there are many scenic drives if you wish to not hike. One HUGE con to this park is that it gets insanely hot during the summer. One of my memories from this trip was hiking in 100 degree weather at sunset time. Despite the hot weather, you should make a visit to this gorgeous park. Though this national park is beautiful, there isn’t much to do besides hike to the arches. Moab, the surrounding town is nice but small, so plan your visit to be around 3 days.

My Hiking Recommendations:

  • Delicate Arch (most popular and my favorite!)
  • Double Arch
  • Broken Arch

4) Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park was one of the recent national parks that I traveled to. I believe I went to this park in June or July. Glacier is located in Montana and spreads to the border of Canada and the US. Since I visited this park in June (or July), there were MANY fires, so most of the lakes and mountains were too smokey to see. Glacier is known for its icy-blue lakes; I was able to see maybe one or two. But, because of the fires, the lakes appeared gray. Despite this, I enjoyed this national park when we saw a glimpse of the huge mountains. Also, I remember seeing black bears, grizzly bears, and other wildlife. Glacier has great hiking trails and scenic drives; one of the most popular things to do is to drive through the Road to the Sun–which goes through most of the park. Known as the Europe of the United States, Glacier is a beautiful park to visit.

Awesome Hikes/Things to do:

  • Avalanche Lake
  • Hidden Lake
  • Highline Trail
  • Road to the Sun

3) Olympic National Park

My third favorite park is Olympic National Park, located in Washington. This park is extra unique because it has three different: rainforest, forest, and the ocean. I enjoyed this park because there was a variety of places to visit. The fact that Olympic Park has different biomes was extremely interesting. Personally, the rainforest ecosystem was my favorite, because it was lush and had amazing trees. If you are looking for a unique park to visit, I would recommend Olympic. A perk to this area is that there are delicious cherries in the summer; you can’t go to Olympic without eating them!!

My Hiking Recommendations:

  • Mount Storm King
  • Hurricane Hill
  • Hall of Mosses Trail
  • Hole-in-the-Wall

2) Zion National Park

Coming in a close second is Zion National Park, also located in Utah. I’ve visited this park twice, once in the winter and once in the summer. There are so many good things to say about this park–I love it so much. In my opinion, Zion is the best park to drive through. When you enter the gates, you are greeted with cosmic mountains that are unlike any other mountains I’ve seen. Zion houses a myriad of hikes, each with its own treasure. One of the most popular (and dangerous) hikes is Angel’s Landing. Although my parents did not let me finish the hike, the end of Angels Landing provides a 360 view of Zion. However, this hike is extremely challenging (it is all uphill until the lookout), and at the end, there are drops on each side of the path. The narrowest part of Angel’s Landing measures 24 inches–keep in mind there is traffic from both sides. Even though I have visited this park twice, I would like to go again (and try Angels Landing).

My Hiking Recommendations:

  • Angels Landing
  • Scout Lookout
  • The Narrows
  • Weeping Rock

1) Grand Teton National Park

My all-time favorite national park is Grand Teton, found in Wyoming. I would say this is my favorite park because of the beautiful mountains, lakes, flowers, and wildlife. One of my memories of going to this park was seeing a mother grizzly bear with her three cubs. Besides the wildlife, this park has AMAZING hikes with waterfalls, huge trees, and great views. Known for its jagged (and snow-topped) mountain peaks, Grand Teton is filled with gorgeous sights to see. A memorable lake to visit is Jackson Lake, which reflects the mountains in the water. I went during the summer, and at Jackson Lake, I remember there were many wildflowers around the perimeter of the lake. That, along with the backdrop of the mountains and its reflections made this park my favorite of all time. Whenever you are looking for an adventurous place to go, I couldn’t recommend Grand Teton enough.

My recommendations:

  • Jackson Lake
  • Jenny Lake Trail
  • Cascade Lake Hike
  • TA Moulton Barn (you NEED to visit this landmark!!!)

Hobbies To Try Before You Graduate

  1. Start a side project: Sometimes time can get too busy, but it’s also important to support your hobbies and interests. A small side project can help you with this and cater to your interests.
  2. Join a club: It’s not too late to get involved or try something new on school campus. Joining a club can help you reconnect and meet others, so don’t be afraid or regret that you should have joined earlier. Joining right now can also be the perfect time.
  3. Playing games with friends and family: It could be simple board, card, word, or even video games. It’s best to make the most of the time you have together.
  4. Attending events: All schools have events like school dances and spirit weeks, but a lot of cities also organize events for residents. Check out the local events around you to reconnect with your community.
  5. Writing: Maybe it’s a letter to your future self in ten years. Maybe it’s a diary or a scrapbook that you can look back on to remember old memories. Either way it’s sure to bring nostalgia back to your future self.
  6. Cooking: It’s one of the most useful life skills to learn before graduation, and it’s also rewarding to eat and see your recipes come to life.
  7. Exploring different cuisines: There are countless different cultures out there, so why not take the time to explore them all? You can learn how to cook them (like in #5) or you could also explore and support local, small businesses.
  8. Learn a new talent: There’s always something, no matter how small, that you want to learn. It could be a magic trick, photography, drawing, literally anything! Learning a new skill can truly bring out a passion of yours that you didn’t know.
  9. Go somewhere new with your friends: Instead of just sticking to the usual campus and hang-out areas, explore or travel somewhere different and fun.
  10. Something new!!!: It could be small; it could be big. Sometimes just trying, despite what fears you may have, is the best way to go.

Gleanings For the Hungry

Imagine being followed by the scent of peaches everywhere you went. That’s what it was like serving at Gleanings for the Hungry, a Christian volunteer camp in Central California. Their main goal is to feed both the physically and spiritually hungry through shipments of dried peaches and nectarines. These are distributed to poverty countries all over the world, along with excerpts of the Bible.

Our youth group went there in July. It was a 6 hour drive, and we would be spending 6 days there although it was open all summer. When we got there, I was immediately hit with the sulfurous fumes from their plant. The weather was oppressively hot, maintaining an average of 110 degrees all day.

We got settled into our cabins, which were separated by gender. Inside were 10 pairs of bunk beds, and we would be sharing with the other churches and families. Soon after, we went to the dining building to get an overview of how our day would be like. At 5 am, we would do 1 hour of field work before the sun came up. Then, we would work in 4 shifts of 2 hours in the plant, turning peaches for the machines and sorting out the bad ones. In total, 9 hours of work a day.

My week went exactly like that. Every day, we got up early to work our shifts, taking breaks in between to eat lunch or snack. After we were completely finished with the work shifts, we cleaned ourselves up. Everybody was splattered in juice and chunks of nectarine. Crickets hopped around the bathrooms.

After work, we had free time. We happened to be at Gleanings during National Slurpee Day at 7/11, so we drove there to get free slurpees. Other days, I mostly spent time in the game room, bonding with members from the other churches. There was pool, ping pong, and card games. You could go out to the volleyball and basketball courts to challenge your friends, or go swimming in the pool. Or, you could walk around the plot of land, hiking up the surrounding hills to see the view of the far away city. Towards the end of the day, we had dinner and chapel. I got to hear amazing testimonies from some of the Gleanings’ staff.

In total, Gleanings was a blessed experience. It was the subversion of my expectations that made the experience all the more worthwhile. I thought we would be exhausted and irritable after all our work. Not to be mistaken, we were exhausted, but our smiles were as bright as the sun.

If you’re planning on going, I highly recommend it. Especially if you’re on the fence about Christianity or you’re looking for a good service opportunity. Just remember to pack clothes you’re not attached to. After Gleanings, those clothes are not recovering.

The Porto Bookstore That Inspired J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter Series

Harry Potter is one of the most best selling books in history. J. K. Rowling has sold more than 600 million copies, but where did she get the inspiration for her fantasy novels? Welcome to Livraria Lello, a famous bookstore in Porto, Portugal that inspired Rowling.

WHAT IS THE LIVRARIA LELLO?

The Livraria Lello was built in 1906 by two brothers, who created one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world with renowned architectural designs. The Livraria Lello has two stories that are connected by a magnificent staircase in the middle of the store. The shelves are elaborately carved and designed. When looking up, there are beautiful stained glass windows that read “Decus in Labore,” which means “Dignity in Work.” The Livraria Lello carries books in different languages, like English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish. There are multiple genres to choose from, and each book has a specially designed cover that can be only bought at the Livraria Lello.

HOW IS HARRY POTTER CONNECTED?

Between 1991 and 1993, J. K. Rowling lived in Porto, so no wonder the beautiful city gave inspiration to the manuscript of the first Harry Potter book. The Livraria Lello is believed to have inspired the inside of Hogwarts and Flourish and Blotts, the bookshop for wizards in Harry Potter.

Books purchased from the Livaria Lello

WOULD I RECOMMEND TO VISIT?

Yes, I would absolutely recommend visiting the Livraria Lello. I had an amazing time exploring the bookstore with my family.

I know that my advice will find you well and I hope you visit Livraria Lello soon!

The Tutoring Experience

This summer, I had the opportunity to tutor for the first time for an organization called MathMatters. I would teach kids, usually elementary schoolers, different mathematical concepts. This was a unique but fun experience, and I have enjoyed helping younger kids grow a liking for math.

For the past few years, I have helped my brother with different subjects, including math and ELA, trying my best to teach him efficiently and effectively. Tutoring for MathMatters allowed me to put this to the test and see what ways of teaching benefited each child the most, while also noticing the differences in personality between each student. This aspect, in my opinion, was the most intriguing part of the entire opportunity. Some students were talkative, while others were more shy and reserved, meaning different ways of communication were essential for a proper session. This process allowed me to understand the difficulty of being a teacher. Teaching requires great patience and compassion, including the ability to interact with all students, knowing each person is unique. While some students understood everything quickly and easily, others required more practice to grasp the concepts.

Overall, tutoring was a unique experience that came with different challenges but allowed me to grow as a person and learn strategies about how to help children in the most effective ways.

How To Manage Your Time Better With Apps

It’s about 10 p.m. the night, and Emily realizes she has a five-page essay due before 12 and starts panicking. She begins fighting with the clock trying to get this assignment done before it causes a dent in her grades, and she regrets not doing her work earlier and thinks about how she could have done this better. This scenario is one of the likely things that a person with bad time management experiences. Most of the time, students with bad time management get low grades at school, so here are some apps that can help you improve your grades with better time management.

The most important thing to manage your time is reducing your screen time or having a limit on it. Most teenagers spend most of their time doing nothing but scrolling on social media for hours, such as TikTok and Instagram, and they aren’t even aware of it or can’t seem to break away from it. As a teenager who has personally experienced this, sometimes an app limit or screentime limit is useless, especially since most of the time, I just hit the “Ignore Time Limit” on the feature and I get back to scrolling mindlessly on social media. I was aware of this and began testing out a few apps that supposedly claim to help reduce your screen time. After doing lots of testing, I found an app that works for me. This might work for me, but it does not mean it might not work for others. This app is called “One Sec,” and it is on the App Store and Play Store, so anyone can download the app. The app is not fully free, but it allows you to still block apps and reduce your screen time. When you download this app and follow the tutorial, it will help you run a shortcut on a specific app so that when you open that app, it tells you to take a deep breath. I used this on TikTok because I find myself scrolling on it when I should be doing my homework. It has helped me get a better sense of self-control because when I open my phone and see the “It’s time to take a deep breath,” it allows me to step back and think about my work and how I should get it done. It does get annoying, especially if I don’t need the restriction and I have to wait seconds before opening TikTok, but it is useful when it comes to my schoolwork.

Adding on, another way you can manage their time better is by setting up routines. If you set up a routine and do this continuously, it will turn into a great habit, and it’ll come easy to you. Set up a routine for after school that fits your needs and try to stay consistent with it. Once you stay consistent with it, you will be getting your work done productively, and you might finish your work early and have free time to do whatever you want. The app “Routinery” can help you set up routines and stay consistent with them. I use Routinery for my morning routines and after-school routines, and my life has been easier because of it. For the first few days, it was a struggle trying to stay consistent, but once you do it every day with the timer on Routinery, it will come easy, and sooner or later, you won’t even need the app to remind you to do your homework at 4:00 or drink water after waking up. I think this app is great at helping you manage your time better and probably make your life easier too.

From Pop Stars to Superheros: 2024 Halloween Costume Predictions

Starbucks has started offering pumpkin spice. The air is slightly cooler. Spirit Halloweens are beginning to spring up. Do you know what this means? It’s Halloween season! Fans of the holiday have already begun to plan their outfits for the big night. Throughout the ages, there have always been a few costumes each year that are most popular. Sure, ghosts and witches will always be classics, but the attention of the public usually has been held by specific costumes influenced by popular culture that year. Last year, we saw a large amount of Barbies due to the recent release of The Barbie Movie. According to this article, in 1951, Alice from Alice In Wonderland was the way to go. The same article also states that in 1979, Superman was all the rage. This got me wondering. What would the most popular costumes this year be?

Here are my predictions for the top Halloween costumes of 2024:

  1. Betelgeuse/Beetlejuice
No, I’m not talking about the star! The new movie in the Beetlejuice franchise (Beetlejuice Beetlejuice), came to the big screen at the beginning of September. It is a sequel to the original movie, which came out in 1998. Viewers will definitely be inspired by the title character’s iconic stripe suit and crazy hair.
  2. Deadpool and Wolverine
Deadpool and Wolverine was released to great anticipation in July. I think that this duo will be a very popular costume among Marvel fans. We may see a few people dressing up as only Deadpool or Wolverine, but It will be more common to see pairs of the two characters.
  3. Chappell Roan
Chappell Roan has probably been all over your For You Page recently. Not only is her music incredibly catchy, her stage costumes and presence are breath-taking. While my personal favorite is her Statue of Liberty or butterfly looks, all of her outfits are jaw-dropping. Expect lots of glitter this Halloween.
  4. Jojo Siwa
You may still associate Jojo Siwa with bows and rainbows, but this past year, she went through a total change of style. Expect to see her “Karma” music video look everywhere.
  5. Olympics (Specifically Raygun)
The 2024 Summer Olympics were a thrill to watch. We saw some of our favorite athletes competing for gold. Athletes are always a common costume, and the Olympics will magnify that. One specific athlete I predict will be a common costume is Raygun. The Australian breakdancer was all over the internet for her controversial break dancing style.
  6. Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders
AMERICA’S SWEETHEARTS: Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders appeared on Netflix in early summer. It provides insight into the life of a Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader and also follows the history of the coveted position. The series has been trending on Netflix since it was released in June, so naturally dressing as a Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader will be a popular choice this Halloween.

Those are my predictions for the most popular costumes this year. What are you planning on being this Halloween?
