2024 Oso Fit 5k Fun Run & Community Health Fair

The Oso Fit 5K Fun Run and Community Health Fair is an annual event in Mission Viejo and focuses on promoting health and wellness. This event is hosted by the City of Mission Viejo and the Mission Viejo Chamber of Commerce. There is a 5K as well as a kids’ quarter and half mile run. If you walk around the free Community Health Fair, there are more than 100 health and wellness organizations offering giveaways, handouts and free health screenings. All of the runs are along the scenic Oso Creek Trail. The fire department had little firefighter hats that they were handing out to the kids. There was music, and different food vendors who had lots to offer as well. I was there hosting a craft table with the Mission Viejo Activities Committee and got to see witness all the joy that was at this event.

Why I loved it, and why you should go next year:

  • There are so many cool vendors that have super fun games, crafts, and more.
  • It is a wonderful all-inclusive experience for the whole family to join in on.
  • This event supports and gives back to local charities (which we all want).
  • The medal has the Oso Fit bear mascot on it.
  • As a Mission Viejo Activities Committee volunteer, this event is great because you get a lot of hours for helping the community with activities and crafts.

Why You Should Play Tennis

The facts don’t lie. Tennis is a racket sport with many physical and social benefits. I have been playing tennis for 6 years and absolutely love every second of it. Let’s dive into the top 4 reasons why you should play tennis.

  1. The Health Aspect

Besides the exhilarating fun of tennis, the sport has many health advantages. According to Better Health Channel (https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/health/healthyliving/tennis-health-benefits), tennis “increas[es] aerobic capacities, lower[s] resting heart rate and blood pressure, improv[es] metabolic function, increas[es] bone density, lower[s] body fat, improv[es] muscle tone, strength and flexibility, and increas[es] reaction times.” It goes without saying that tennis is a wonderful sport to keep your strength, agility, and general fitness up.

2. Tennis is the Number One Sport in the World to Live Longer

According to the National Institutes of Health (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30193744/), one can increase their lifespan by playing tennis with a whopping 10 years. Out of all sports, tennis is number one. Reasons for this include the social contact, the physical aspect, balance, and mental toughness.

3. Social Interactions

Tennis is a great way to connect with others in your community and can create lifelong friendships. For example, the tennis courts located at the City of Mission Viejo Recreation Centers are gold mines for those interested in connecting with others via the good game of tennis. Personally, I’ve met many good friends playing tennis and even my best friend!

4. Stress Reliever

In a natural process, playing tennis can help you forget about everyday concerns and increase your feel-good endorphins. As stated in Tennisct.com, “Tennis helps you deal with physical, mental, emotional and social challenges which in turn increases your capacity to handle stress.” Whenever I play tennis, I am so focused on the ball that everything around me disappears and the tennis ball is the only thing I’m thinking about. This same feeling is true for most players.

In conclusion, tennis has a multitude of benefits which are calling your name! Try tennis out and who knows, maybe you’ll fall in love with the sport!

Fielding in Baseball

In baseball there is the pitcher, catcher, and the fielders. The fielders are supposed to catch the ball what the batter hit, like a ground ball or a fly ball. There are different ways to field a ground ball, there is the normal fielding stance, backhand, and forehand.

Normal Fielding Stance

This is a type of fielding where the ground ball is directly hit to you. These are the steps to field a ground ball in a normal fielding stance.

  1. Be in a athletic stance.
  2. Legs spread apart.
  3. Glove down.
  4. Put your hand above the glove.

You will need to have your hand above the glove to secure the ball when you catch the ball in the glove.

Backhand

This is a type of fielding where the ground ball is hit to your non-glove side and where you need to get the glove to your throwing side. These are the steps to field a ground ball in a backhand.

  1. Be in a athletic stance.
  2. Get your glove to your throwing side.
  3. Get the ball in your glove and close your glove.

Since you don’t have your throwing hand to be securing the ball, you will need to close your glove.

Forehand

This is a type of fielding where the ground ball is hit to your far glove side and where you need to reach. These are the steps to field a ground ball in a forehand.

  1. Be in a athletic stance.
  2. Reach for the ball with your glove.
  3. Secure the ball by closing your glove.

For forehand also you will need to close your glove to secure the ball.

Hitting Mechanics

Many people I mean a lot of people teach kids how to hit a baseball the WRONG way. This is how people teach baseball kids the wrong way:

  1. 50-50 balance on the leg.
  2. Leg kick
  3. Hip rotation
  4. Knob to the ball
  5. Turn wrists to the ball
  6. Extension on the arm
  7. Follow through

These were the way or the steps of teaching baseball kids the wrong. Pro hitters do not turn their wrists or not always get the knob to the ball, instead they think of skipping a rock as flat as possible. Then the path of the bat would be more smoother. This would be the correct way or Aaron Judge’s hitting steps:

  1. Have most of the weight on the back leg
  2. Turn wrists and lean back
  3. Think of skipping a rock with the top hand
  4. Have hands be on top and bottom of the handle
  5. Follow through

These steps are inspired by TeacherMan Hitting. These steps give you a wider vision of the field and better vision of the baseball when hitting. This works for rotational swing and linear swing hitters. The difference between rotational swing and linear swing hitters:

Rotational Swing Hitters:

  • Have a more angled swings
  • Likely to hit more off speed pitches that are angled more

Linear Swing Hitters:

  • Have a flatter swings
  • Likely to hit more fastballs consistently.

Pitching Mechanics for Baseball

There are many people with different pitching mechanics in baseball. Why pitchers work on their mechanics is because to prevent them from getting injured. If a pitcher gets injured they wouldn’t have playing time and if they don’t have playing time they wouldn’t get paid. These are the things to watch out for while throwing a ball or pitching to give you best performance without getting injured easily.

Arm Slot

Arm slot could differ for some people but some arm slots isn’t healthy for your muscles or ligaments around the shoulder or the elbow. Shoulders and elbows are the most common injury to have while throwing a baseball. The most healthy arm slot to have a 3 quarter arm slot which is an angle between a side arm and the overhand.

Wrist Snap

This technique doesn’t matter for some people but it may increase pitching velocity for ones who use this. Also this would create less pressure on the elbow and the shoulder. The disadvantage of this technique from my experience is that many off speed wouldn’t have as much movement.

Hip Rotation

This technique helps for all pitchers with different arm slots. Using this technique would give you more explosive power while pitching. This would work if this technique is used correctly, you would need to load your hip before your non-pivot foot touches the ground after the leg kick. And you would need to rotate your hip towards home plate and throw the ball.

All these technique could improve your mechanics while throwing a ball or while pitching. Also these would decrease the probabilities of getting injured.

Playing multiple sports

I hear more people are saying, “If you play a sport, you become a good athlete. If you want to be an elite athlete, you need to play multiple sports”. And one even said that you need to play multiple sports by the age of 13.

According to National Alliance for Youth Sports (NAYS), 40 million children play sports each year. But when they become 13 years old, 70 percents of them quit playing sports because it is not fun anymore.

This study might explain why they are recommending to play multiple sports by the age of 13. And here is my experience.

AAA

When I started playing baseball for the first time, I was placed in AAA division at the Little League after the tryout. I remember I was 10 years old. I loved the games and practices. There is little bit of discipline, but there are a lot of encouragement from coaches and other adults. Overall, it was PURE FUN

Junior

When I returned the little league from Japan, I was 14 years old, and I was placed in the Juniors. Many things were different. The coaches expected us to behave and perform better. My coach was the one of nicest coach, so we received a lot of encouragement and appraisal a lot. But when we didn’t perform well, we’ll get yelling by the frustrated coaches.

All Stars

This summer, I was selected in the All Stars after little league season was over. During the meeting before All Star practice started, the coaches told us that “In the little league, we hope every players enjoy playing baseball. That was the goal. In All Star, our goal is to WIN, not to have fun. So some players might be all ways benched and not be able to play the game.”

The higher the division goes, there is less in focusing on having fun, and coaches expectation got higher. And we received more yelling. This my experience supports the National Alliance for Youth Sports study. I still enjoy playing baseball, but some players might felt NOT FUN TO PLAY SPORTS ANYMORE.

That might be why many people recommend to play multiple sports since young age while coaches are focusing on player to purely have fun.

Why you should do Long-Distance Running

In the summer before my freshman year, I started training for cross-country, a sport that focuses on long-distance running. At first, running was extremely difficult (and still is), but I am so thankful for the friends and experiences I have made. If you enjoy working out or want to exercise more, long-distance running is a great hobby to pick up.

Running is one of the most challenging sports. While only a little technical skill is involved, running is a physical and mental sport. Long-distance running is extremely difficult breathing-wise, but what makes it most challenging are the thoughts of “I can’t do this, This is too hard, I need to stop.” However, if you remain consistent in running, it will become easier.

You may ask yourself, “Why should I run?” (That is a question I still ask myself sometimes). Well, here are some benefits of running:

  • Improves cardiovascular system
  • Strengthens bones
  • Burns Calories
  • Releases endorphins
  • Improves endurance

Besides these benefits, running has helped my mental health and is a stress reliever. When I run, I can take my mind off school and other worries. This is partly due to the released endorphins and because the pain distracts me from thinking about other things.

When starting to run, I’d highly recommend running with a friend or joining a cross-country/track team. Running with others makes it easier because you have people to push you to your best potential. In addition, running is a great bonding experience because all runners can relate to the fact that running is hard. So, when you’re wondering what to do for exercise or are bored, I recommend running in your free time.

Thanks for reading! I’m going to make a post about how to start long-distance running, so stay updated!!

Film Session

As I have never been in football, many things are new to me. Today was a Film Session. We usually have a game on Thursdays, so we have a film session on Fridays.

Film Session:

According to wekipedia.com, Film session is “The term was coined by the NFL in reference to making a better defense or offense while preparing for the next Sunday opponent by choreographing the weaknesses shown by the game tape thus opening up the chances for more opportunities of success.”

My coach kicked off the conversation to review the videos that one of the coaches took, some of my teammates were laughed at because they were doing the wrong move on the field and causing some touchdowns when they could have tackled and stopped them.

As I switched the Sports to Football from Baseball few weeks ago, I still had not enough practice, and didn’t get to play the game. I should have focused on the film so that I could learn more about tactics and plan for the future game. However, I started to think about what I could have done this hour, like homework or batting and pitching practice. Then the film finally ended and rushed out of the classroom door, then dashed to the baseball field. Once I got to the field, the coaches asked, “Why are you here?” “Using my time wisely and getting some reps in.” I said. I changed into my baseball gear and headed out to the field.
