Why You Should Always Name Things

You should always name things. It’s just so much more fun that way! Why ask where your water bottle is, when you could ask why Harry is? Why complain about your cast when you could whine about Brad? Not only does naming things help you remember them, it also brings a little positivity to your life.

Naming things is an effective way to remember your items. It creates a sense of family. Not only that, it’s just so fun that you can’t possibly forget! It is however much easier to find where you put, let’s say headphones, if you can yell out “HAS ANYONE SEEN BEATRICE?!?!” Then all of your family members also know exactly what you are looking for.

Another reason to name things is to bring some positivity to your life. Let’s all be real, naming random things can bring a smile to your face. Whenever I hear someone call my friend’s water bottle Harry, it’s just so random and hilarious that I have to laugh, or at least smile. If you are having a bad day, something this simple can really brighten it up.

To conclude, you should always name things. Life is just better that way.

Freshman Advice

I know that high school may seem like this big daunting thing that is super scary and stressful. I can tell you from personal experience that while it can get stressful at times, it truly isn’t as bad as it seems. I have complied some tips that I have learned along the way that I wish freshman me had and I wanted to share them with you today.

  1. Time Management

I know this may seem cliche but I truthfully believe this is the one thing that will lead you to success. Time management doesn’t mean getting a planner out and planning out every single second of your day, it could just mean writing a reminder in your phone about when an assignment is due. I cannot stress the importance of using your phone as an academic tool. I personally like to use my phones calendar as a reminder system because I can set it to be a lock screen widget. I can say that the calendar has saved me stress more times then I can count.

2. Join Clubs!

Another cliche but it really is true. Clubs are the way to make yourself stand out in a crowd. I know thinking about college right now may seem scary but thinking about the little things you can start freshman year that your future self will thank you for is very important. I personally didn’t start joining clubs until my Junior year and that is when you should be going for leadership positions and trying to make your extra curriculars stronger. If your school provides it, I think CSF or California Scholarship Federation, is the best club to join your freshman year. It is a volunteering based club which means it teaches you how to time manage as well as make an impact on the community!

3. Try Sports Out

Now, I’m not saying go all into sports and make that the only thing on your mind, but if you generally are not an athletic person, joining a no cut sport may help boost your athleticism and make more friends. I decided to give a no cut sport a try my Sophomore year and I can say that some of my best friends came out of that sport. Remember, if you don’t like it you don’t have to stay! No one is forcing you to do that sport, you are always free to say I don’t like this and quit. Nothing is wrong with quitting if it doesn’t make you happy to be there, happiness is always the main priority.

These were some simple tips and tricks I have complied to help out the future class of freshman before going into high school. The main tip I have is to have fun! Not everything is as serious as it seems, everyone is learning and everyone will make mistakes. You got this 🙂

Advice From A Current Senior

I am now approaching the end of my senior year and have plenty of advice to give to those either entering high school, or those who will soon be seniors.

Sports

My top advice even before getting into classes would be getting involved with your school’s sports. Join a sports team, even if you’re not very good or nervous. You will make so many friends on a team and even more memories. I ran in track and field my freshman and sophomore years and still think back to all the great times I had. I was beyond nervous joining track but have no regrets now. Being a part of a sport will also greatly improve your mental health because you’ll be outside and exercising releases serotonin.

Classes

I recommend everyone to at least try an advanced class at some point in high school. I especially recommend taking honors courses your freshman and sophomore years because the classes are relatively easy for the GPA boost. Secondly, I recommend taking all your harder classes your first three years of high school so your senior year is easier. You really do not want to overload your schedule senior year because you will probably be worrying about college, life after high school, or working a job. Finally, my last recommendation is taking health, civics/government, or economics online over the summer. Most schools should have this as an option and typically the summer courses are shorter than a semester. This will free up time your senior year to either get out of school earlier or take other electives you’re interested in

Extracurricular/Miscellaneous

My final recommendation is just getting involved with your school. Go to school dances, join clubs, and go to sport’s games. I never went to any dances my freshman and sophomore year of highschool and it has been one of my biggest regrets. Enjoy going to football games or watching other sports because you might regret it once you graduate. Finally, don’t be afraid to join some clubs. This will help you make friends, explore your interests and look good for college applications.

Back To School!

SOS! It’s that time of year again where every student excitedly buys new pencils and backpacks only to step foot onto campus and dread the long looming 180 days ahead of them. Leaving summer’s clutches and watching the warm days melt away is definitely bittersweet but the school year has so much to offer!

Needing motivation? Here, read this:

  • Remember that education is a privilege and you are incredibly lucky to have the opportunity to broaden your knowledge for free. There are so many children around the world that dream of being in your shoes. Take advantage of this opportunity and spend this year making the effort to enjoy and indulge in learning!
  • Find something that makes you look forward to school each day! Maybe it’s seeing a friend in French class or maybe you love the way your history teacher makes class interesting. Maybe it’s a club you can regularly hang out with or maybe it’s heading to the library and reading all the amazing books it has to offer. School will be so much more enjoyable and tolerable if you find something good about it.
  • Make incentives! Reward yourself each day once you get home from school because you deserve it. Whether it’s allowing yourself to watch your favorite Netflix show for an hour or going outside for a bike ride, make something to look forward to throughout the day.
  • The experience. Let me explain this more thoroughly: going to school and interacting with others teaches you so many important life lessons–some of which are more important than the academic lessons taught. A humanities based education broadens your mind and improves your critical thinking skills, communicating with your peers improves your social skills, hearing opinions of others opens your eyes to new ideals and possibilities. There’s so much to gain by going to school and being attentive and engaged.

Need some good studying music? I have you covered! (*=my personal favorites!)

  • If you’re into dream pop, psychedelic rock, indie pop, or lo-fi, I suggest listening to Peach Pit*, Hippo Campus, Spissy*, Swimming Tapes, The Growlers, COIN, Yellow Days, Mac Demarco, Summer Salt, Beach Fossils, Billie Eilish, or The Kooks! They all give off a very laid back, dreamy vibe that is perfect to play as background music as you complete math homework!
  • If you’re still wishing you were sunbathing at the beach instead of studying, I recommend Sublime, Hockey Dad*, Golden Coast, Viola Beach, Bob Marley, Blossoms, Real Estate*, Cage The Elephant*, Circa Waves*, or Jon Bellion. They create a peaceful illusion that soothes you and sends you right back to sandy, sunny bliss!
  • If you’re more of a punk rock, alternative rock, grunge, pop rock type of person, you’re bound to like at least one of the following bands: All Time Low*, Green Day*, Nirvana, Boys Like Girls*, We The Kings, The All-American Rejects, The Smashing Pumpkins, Guns N’ Roses, Nothing But Thieves, or machineheart. Definitely more upbeat, slightly feisty and very fun to dance around to during a studying break!
  • Finally, if you’re one of those people who dread the uncomfortable stickiness of summer heat and you can’t wait for cool fall days, I have a sweater weather playlist for you. You can almost smell pumpkin everything when you listen to artists like Lana Del Rey*, LANY*, Little May, Arctic Monkeys, The Neighbourhood*, The 1975*, Two Door Cinema Club, Ed Sheeran, X Ambassadors, Josh Groban, or Seafret*.

In a perfect world, this post would amp all of you up about going back to school but alas, we live in a fallen society. Hopefully this at least encouraged a select few of you to view school in a positive way. Best wishes this school year, everyone!!
