Can’t Hurt Me written by David Goggins chronicles his extraordinary journey from a troubled childhood marked by the abuse by his father to becoming a highly respected U.S. Navy Seal and renowned endurance athlete. This book dives into Goggins’ struggles with self doubt, obesity, and a challenging upbringing, overall illustrating how he overcame these obstacles through sheer determination and relentless work ethic.

In this book, I really liked the emphasis Goggins puts on the power of the mind of surpassing one’s limits. This is demonstrated in the 40% percent rule as mentioned in the book which is a rule that states when you think you are at 100%, you are only at 40% of your power. This serves as a motivational benchmark for me and many other around the world. By using this rule, the potential for personal growth and surpassing one’s limits is significantly increased. The idea that mental barriers often limit one’s potential is emphasized heavily in this book and Goggins promotes the notion that the mind can be the strongest ally in achieving greatness.

Another idea that I Iiked was the idea of “pain as a teacher.” In this book, physical and emotional pain are portrayed as essential elements for growth, highlighting how discomfort can lead to self discovery and resilience. In this book, Goggins emphasizes the idea of seeing pain as a good thing and embracing it instead of seeing it as something that you should avoid at all cost. Experiencing pain means that you are getting better and growing. Getting uncomfortable is how you achieve your goals and staying comfortable is not going to get you anywhere. That is the lesson Goggins wants the reader to learn through illustrating his journey.

Overall, this book is a must read, the practical lessons that David Goggins teaches us along with his personal stories truly makes this book one of one. This book serves as a powerful testament to human potential and resilience.

Never Finished by David Goggins

Never Finished is yet another memoir by David Goggins. While this autobiography can be enjoyed as a standalone book, it assumes that the reader is already familiar with David Goggin’s story and his first book Can’t Hurt Me.

In his first book, Goggins describes how he overcame a traumatic childhood, mental disability, and health issues to defy odds and more. He is now a retired Navy SEAL, accomplished endurance athlete, Advanced Emergency Technician, public speaker, and wildland firefighter.

It enhances the previous book by elaborating and providing insight into earlier overlooked events. There is a great balance between introducing new topics and improving old ones.

In his previous book, Goggins introduced tips after every chapter to improve yourself such as journaling, compartmentalizing your day, visualizing, and using an “accountability mirror”. Unlike these more straightforward “Challenges” that Goggins used, this book provides “Evolutions”. These are not simple quick-fix habits. Instead, they present ideas for you to question yourself, and change for the better. Some of these ideas are summarized below:

  • “The Winners Mentality” – Find strength and energy in everything, even in defeat
  • “One-Second Decision” – In the moment of suffering, we often forget our goals and feel the need to quit. No matter how long you have been working, moments of weakness and strength are counted in seconds. So, take a knee and evaluate the situation.
  • “Trained Humility” – Be humble enough to accept that you will never know everything, and let that fuel you to grow more.
  • “Foxhole Mentality” – Small minds and weak people kill dreams, so surround yourself with those who support and push you to be your best.

While small habits are the key to getting started, deeply improving yourself through your mindset and values is the next step.

One of the final ideas that I enjoyed was the idea that there are no “part-time savages”. Many might work hard hoping that when they achieve their goal they can finally rest. Goggins says, “When you are always on the grind, you think there will come a time when the rough road…will smooth out, but that is never the case.” When you finally reach the top of the mountain, there might be another taller one waiting for you.

Goggins makes it clear that while he has achieved great success, his journey is still not over. Shortly after the success of his first book, he had a heart scare which forced him to take another break from endurance events. Even though he had done so much, and his heart condition gave him a reason to stop, Goggins knew that he could do more.

Overall, Never Finished by David Goggins is another amazing read, fit for anyone who would like to improve themselves in any aspect of life.

Can’t Hurt Me by David Goggins

Many people make excuses on a daily basis and procrastinate on their goals. They limit themselves and settle for less. David Goggins is not one of these people. 

He has had every excuse in the world to be a failure. He has suffered from a traumatic childhood, sickle cell, learning disabilities, a congenital heart defect, and many more. Despite this, he has become a top endurance athlete and a successful public speaker. In addition, he is the only person to have completed training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force Tactical Controller.

This autobiography not only tells his story but provides helpful tips to discipline yourself and begin your own self-improvement journey.

If you have goals, this book is for you. Whether you want to get fit, do better in school, learn an instrument, or land a promotion, you always need hard work and discipline. After every chapter, Goggins gives tips to help keep yourself accountable and “callous your mind”. Some of these include:

  • Journal your “excuses” and view them as things to overcome
  • Use an Accountability Mirror to list goals & insecurities
  • Do things that make you feel uncomfortable
  • Flip the script by working harder and becoming excellent
  • Visualize and meditate
  • Compartmentalize your day creating an optimal schedule

This list may seem intimidating at first. You may think that these methods only work for the best. It may surprise you, but David Goggins was once an overweight failure with a dead-end job. He was discharged from the military for medical reasons, but in reality, he had quit. But no matter how many times he failed, he always came back and pushed through.

The fact that Goggins shows his many highs and lows makes the book much more relatable. He does not always succeed. Every time he makes it over a hill, it seems like a steeper one presents itself. But, even when he achieved greatness, he always strived for more. If he is unable to serve in the army further, why not try becoming a speaker and army recruiter? Why not become an endurance athlete and break the pull-up record? Why stop?

Another one of my favorite ideas presented is the 40% Rule. David Goggins believes that when you feel like you are finished, you are only doing 40% of what you are capable of. Whether it is running farther than usual, working later hours, or going for one more rep, pushing yourself will have results. Breaking these limits is crucial to achieving success.

His personal experience with failure and perseverance make this book that much more effective. Unlike many self-help books that may provide temporary motivation, this autobiography may help you achieve permanent discipline. This book has changed millions of lives, including mine. If you want to achieve a goal, this book will help you.
