It Starts with Us: A Novel (2) (It Ends with Us): Hoover, Colleen: 9781668001226: Amazon.com: Books

It Starts With Us is a sequel to the book It Ends With Us that surrounds the main character, Lily Bloom, and the direction of her life after her breakup with Ryle, her abusive ex. Colleen Hoover, the author, expands on the new found relationship between Lily and her young love, Atlas, while in the process of letting go of Ryle. Balancing work, family, and relationships, this book is told through Lily and Atlas’s perspectives as they grow closer and face challenges together.

As read in the previous book, Ryle has a hard time being aware of others and his surroundings. Being selfish and making situations a lot more exaggerated than they should be, was a bad habit he formed. He still very much wants to be a part of Lily’s life, and Lily does not want to take that away from him, mainly because of their daughter, Emerson (Emmy for short), but she fears that his temper towards her will lead to her daughter receiving the same anger and impatience from him overtime. Lily is scared for Emmy’s future and even having a civil conversation with Ryle about certain rules in place for their dynamic, gives her anxiety.

Lily tries to distance herself as much as she can from him and after an encounter with Atlas, they soon get back in touch. Atlas has always been in love with Lily waiting for her, growing his business, and ignoring his past. But having her back in his world enlightens his life, reliving and relearning everything about each other. Lily feels the same but convinced herself to be precautious and take things slow to be aware of Ryle and his reaction to them being together. Hoover shows a side of Atlas not seen before and takes the audience down a sad road as to why he didn’t have home when he was younger and his emotions and thoughts when he met Lily. Lily falls in love with Atlas all over again, thinking of him as “considerate Atlas”.

The conflict and plot overall of the story drags out a little but still makes the story good enough to read. Personally, I did not like this book as much as the first one, it was more of a slower pace. The first book got so much attention that Hoover felt she needed to come out with a sequel. It was dry but I wanted to finish the book, even though you can pretty much predict the ending of it from the start. There was so much detail leading up to the relationship with Lily and Atlas that by the end it felt rushed. Yet I would still recommend this series as there are still unexpected twists and some chapters were definitely more intriguing than others.

“Yes No Maybe So” by Becky Albertalli & Aisha Saeed (Book Review)

*Contains some spoilers*

Yes No Maybe So: 9780062937032: Albertalli, Becky, Saeed, Aisha: Books - Amazon.com

Yes No Maybe So is a story of 2 different people, from different worlds, that are forced to come together and decide to stay together.

To elaborate Jamie Goldberg, a shy, unpopular guy in high school gets the worst luck when he has to do one of the things he hates most, public speaking. His cousin, Gabe, who is Rossum’s (a man running for state senate) campaign manager, and his family are automatically required to help spread the word and convince others to vote for Rossum. Jamie likes to help but he has to go canvassing and since he refuses to say a speech at his little sister’s bar mitzvah in front of friends and family, he can’t comprehend the fact of doing that in front of strangers.

Maya Rehman, on the other hand, is confident and friendly but is having the worst Ramadan. Her parents are separating, which came as a complete surprise to her. Her best friend, who is a year older than her, is going off to college and leaving Maya behind in a way. Then to find out that she might be leaving early for college and won’t really get to hang out with Maya all summer, crushes Maya. She is unaware of her summer plans now, not really wanting to be home but not having a car for transportation and on top of it not allowed to date or have a boyfriend. Her parents suggest her to go canvassing to help family friends and if she does it, it will live up her chances of getting a car. It just so happens that Jamie and Maya end up going canvassing together, which starts their story.

I personally loved this book, the detail, and the chemistry between the characters. How they took the differences of them, their personality, households, and background to create drama, sensitivity, hardship, and love within the book. The main conflict was Jamie’s confrontation and Maya’s parents and idea of boys. Throughout the book Jamie and Maya’s relationship grows but it moves very quickly towards the end which made it feel too rushed for me. Overall, I would recommend this book, knowing it is a mixture of politics and romance, but the writing of each page makes the book one of my favorite reads yet!

The Eras Tour – Taylor Swift (Movie/Concert Review)

This year I went to see Taylor Swift on tour and in the movie theater and it was such an amazing experience and a core memory. Here is the comparison and overall pros and cons of both!

Concert: I was looking forward to her concert for almost a year and when it reached the day, I was so excited. I got all dressed up and listened to her music in the car on the way there. The concert was a little over 3 hours long, I had floor seats which were amazing and the stage effects and dancers, backup singers, and band were great and on point! Opening acts were Gracie Abrams, who I love, and HAIM. Taylor sang a couple songs from each album in order of, Lover (6 songs), Fearless (3 songs), Evermore (5 songs), Reputation (4 songs), Speak Now (1 song), Red (4 songs), Folklore (7 songs), 1989 (5 songs), 2 Surprise Songs, and Midnights (7 songs). My favorite album is Lover but the most fun and cool one to watch at the concert, I think, was Reputation. Overall it was great and worth it and I am so grateful I got to see her live and sing along to all the songs!

Movie: The movie shows a different perspective on her concert. More close up and vivid, with showing the details of the outfits, stage effects, the crowd, and the band. It was filmed from a few of her show nights in LA. It was so fun to sing along again and relive the memories with my friends and family who couldn’t make it to the actual concert. If you bought a drink or popcorn it comes with a plastic bucket and cup of the eras tour print on it, which I got. Most people that I knew got confused about the movie, it is not as much as a biography documentary but highlighting the tour, no behind the scenes, or her life just simply the music. She had to remove 2-3 songs from the movie, to avoid it being too long. It was a little pricey and a long movie, almost 3 hours, but overall if you like Taylor Swift and know her songs I would definitely recommend, especially now that it is out on TV networks with all the additional songs included.

I would say I very much prefer the concert over the movie, it was an experience like no other, being able to see her in person and sing along with her in a place where everyone loves her, was the best! I am a big fan of Taylor Swift and very impressed with her and her music!

It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover (Book Review)

The book, It Ends With Us, dives deeper into Lily Bloom’s life, a businesswoman, who tries to let go of her past and focus on her future. Lily is constantly reminded of her past in her present-day life and is challenged with the people she meets and the people who return into her life.

The story revolves around her first love Atlas and her new love Ryle. Lily and Atlas were young and in love and promised to return to each other after certain events had separated them. Lily and Ryle however, met later on in Lily’s life, and found themselves growing closer overtime.

Lily’s life is starting to come around as she opens her new business, finds a new best friend, and develops a closer and better relationship with her mother. Yet hardship comes her way as Lily finds out more about Ryle and gets too comfortable with the fact that his version of a relationship is too different from hers. She juggles with the idea of what other people might think of her relationship as she grows in fear of him over the course of months. This leads to her acknowledging where she stands and relates to the abusive relationship between her mother and her father.

Throughout the book you might find yourself wondering, why doesn’t Lily just leave him? How could she make that choice? Why can’t she let go of her past? Well, Lily wonders the same things in most chapters and is able to find an answer and solution to them all by the end.

I personally loved this book, it is very well written and leads the audience in a different direction than most books. The book itself entails a rollercoaster of emotions for the readers. I disliked the intimate/in depth scenes of Lily’s relationship that I skipped past but overall, it was hard to put this book down and I loved the story line so much that I have continued reading onto the sequel!

*Be advised this book is for older readers*

GUTS by Olivia Rodrigo (Album review/comparison)

Olivia Rodrigo came out with her second studio album, GUTS, recently. Now most have heard her chart-breaking songs from her last album, SOUR, like “Drivers License” and “Deja Vu”, with the album as a whole hitting around 300 million streams. But her new song “Vampire” itself has reached about 100 million streams and the album, GUTS is at 200 million streams so far with an upcoming world tour to it. At only 20 years old she has had a very successful acting and music career winning 3 Grammys. On her new album there are 12 songs. My personal favorite songs are “Lacy” and “Get Him Back!”

Lacy, is a 2:57 minute song which dives deeper into comparing oneself to this perfect type of person named Lacy. I love this song because of how relatable it can be and the metaphors she uses in the song like, “skin like puff pastry” and “eyes white as daisies” portraying the amount of effort and potential time she put into this song. It is more of a mellow song with amazing lyrics.

Get Him Back!, a 3:31 minute song dives deeper into the idea of a toxic ex knowing all the bad or annoying things he did but also remembering the fun times with him and deciding if you really want them back or if you just miss the idea of them. The song is very upbeat, fun, and not to structured which gives a unique vibe to it.

I personally love this artist but her new album does not impress me as much as her old one, SOUR. She is overall a very talented artist with so much more to give! I recommend you check out her new music and even her old music!

Five Seconds Flat- Lizzy McAlpine (Album Review)

Lizzy McAlpine is a young musician who was born in Pennsylvania and started writing music when she was in 6th grade. Her second alternative album that she released in 2022 is called, Five Seconds Flat, which consists of 14 tracks and features from FINNEAS, Ben Kessler, Jacob Collier, and Laura Elliot. This album describes the loss and deep thoughts that go through her mind and the love that she has always imagined for herself along with hypothetical thoughts.

The song, Ceilings, became very popular overtime and depicted the idea of a nonexistent relationship feeling like a movie. Towards the beginning of the song she sings, “it feels like the start of a movie I’ve seen before” and at the end of the song she sings, “it feels like the end of a movie I’ve seen before” coming back to reality and realizing it was all a fantasy. A relatable lyric in the song is “I would say all of this but I don’t want to ruin the moment” which can mean trying to not to risk anything yet making memories.

My personal favorite on the album is track 11, Hate to Be Lame (feat. FINNEAS) which is a mellow and suspenseful song. In this song she admits her true emotions and feelings to others. She also describes how she makes excuses for herself in certain situations, “tell myself it’s not the right time or something dumb”. My favorite part is halfway through the song when the beat starts to pick up, and the volume of their voices increases, ending with FINNEAS’s deep voice and joining the two together in harmony to wrap up the entirety of the song.

All of her songs on the album are unique with different meanings and even though the songs Ceilings and Hate to Be Lame (feat. FINNEAS) are amazing and popular (in my opinion) her other songs have more to offer and can be relatable and nostalgic. I very much recommend this album and her music in general!

Emails I Can’t Send Fwd: Sabrina Carpenter (Album Review)

Sabrina Carpenter is mostly known as an actress starring in the Disney show, Girl Meets World, and other movies such as Adventures in Babysitting, Work It, Clouds, and Tall Girl. Yet, most aren’t aware she is a musician at heart. She has released 5 albums and her newest one, in my opinion, is her best one yet.

The original album that was released in 2022, Emails I Can’t Send, consisted of 13 tracks in the pop genre. Leading up after the album, she went on tour and I was lucky enough to go to one of her concerts and sing along to all of her songs. But a couple months after she released the album, she came out with 4 more songs and added them to the album and included the word fwd: to the end of the album title. Emails I Can’t Send Fwd: consists of mellow yet upbeat songs with relatable lyrics. Her most popular song on the album is called, Nonsense, grew in potential and aspired to others through social media. It is now frequently played on the radio and has become well known by most. Sabrina talks about her love interest and how she tried to change for them, or lost herself in the process, along with other emotions. Some of the tracks and the meaning behind them are listed below:

Read Your Mind (track 3): This upbeat song compliments the idea of not being able to express one’s emotions or making up their mind. The frustration of giving mixed signals in a relationship and contradicting between their words and actions and their overall stance between their significant other.

How Many Things (track 7): This song recalls good memories in a relationship or friendship and putting the effort in. Giving more attention towards the person, compared to the other. One of her lyrics states, “I feel myself falling further down your priorities” expressing the loss of interest.

Feather (track 15): This newer song includes the sense of letting something go. Feeling the weight lifted off your shoulders and not having that person or thing on your mind anymore creating the idea of “feeling light as a feather”.

I would definitely recommend this album as each song is unique and different and dives deeper into Sabrina’s life.
