Santa Ana City Library

Central Library, Santa Ana — Preserve Orange County

My family and I are big books readers and we visit many libraries in different cities. While the Mission Viejo Library is definitely one of my favorite libraries I recently visited the Santa Ana City Library and it was very different.

The library was one of the bigger ones that I have visited, it had a large children’s selection and adult section. However, one thing that separates this library apart from the others that I have been to is that it had one of the coolest teen sections I have ever scene. So, when you enter the library there is signs that guide you downstairs to the teen section and I will admit at first I wasn’t so sure about going down there, but once I did it was really cool. They had arcade games and so many books. There were many activities there too.

Another cool feature about this library is that you could check out items. They had a drawer that contained cards for certain things. So, you could check out Nintendo Switch games, board games, and even things like a leaf blower and tools.

All in all, I give this library a rating of 10/10 because it was really cool and I would definitely visit it again.

1989 (Taylor’s Version) Review

Taylor Swift: 1989 (Taylor's Version) Album Review | Pitchfork

In 2014 Taylor Swift released her album 1989, which was the mark of her full transfer to pop after being a country singer. It received a lot of praise and it brought out so many emotions that her fans absolutely loved.

She has been rerecording her albums to regain control of her older music and on October 27, 2023 she released 1989 (Taylor’s Version). The album had all of the re-recorded versions of her 1989 songs, but also some new songs called Sl*t” Say Don’t Go, Suburban Legends, and Now That We Don’t Talk. The new tracks she added were amazing but I believe that they didn’t fit the 1989 “vibe.” To me, the songs were too “chill” and they didn’t have the feel of 1989. Taylor Swift is fully capable of making a completely new album including those songs rather than adding them to a re-recorded version of an old album. I am also highly aware that many fans disagree with me, for I have had many small arguments with my friends on this topic.

All in all, I truly loved this album and I think that Taylor Swift has really achieved so many great things in life.

Candidly Cline: Supporting Roles

Candidly Cline by Kathryn Ormsbee - Audiobook | Scribd

The book Candidly Cline by Kathryn Ormsbee is about a girl named Cline who dreams of being a singer/ songwriter. However, her mother doesn’t believe that being a musician is a suitable profession that would allow Cline to make a living. In this book Cline finds many new friends that help in unexpected ways, while, sadly, losing her best friend. Cline’s employer Mrs. Yune, her teacher Mrs. Johnson, and her partner Sylvie all help her in various ways.

Mrs. Yune first employs Cline to babysit children at the church nursery. Even though Cline doesn’t attend church, Mrs. Yune happily lets Cline take the job because they have a lack of employees. This is helpful to Cline because the music camp she wants to attend has a high fee and her mother is not willing to pay for it. Later, when Cline is going to leave the camp, because she doesn’t have enough money, Mrs. Yune helpfully gives Cline money she was saving up so Cline could fulfill her dream. Mrs. Yune also comforts Cline after her best friend, Hollie, rejects her. Mrs. Yune is a very important character in this book, even if she is not the main character.

Cline’s music class is taught by Mrs. Johnson, a well trained and famous musician. Mrs. Johnson teaches Cline how to write songs and music. She allows Cline to join the class, even when she doesn’t yet have all the money for it. Finally, when Cline’s mother was not going to allow her to continue the class, Mrs. Johnson visited their house and convinced her mother to let Cline to stay. Mrs. Johnson helped a lot with Clines musical journey.

Sylvie is Cline’s partner in the music class and her friend. When Cline and Sylvie first met, Sylvie was in a bad mood, but at the next class the girls become good friends and connect through music. Sylvie was a big help to Cline when Hollie wasn’t being a good friend by comforting her and making her laugh. With their special connection they make a beautiful song and win a competition. The two girls quickly fell for each other, which was Cline’s main inspiration for their audition song. Their strong connection played a major part in the story, by not only helping them both find who they are, but also connecting them in a way only music could express.

Though these characters didn’t have major roles in this story they still were helpful to Cline. Whether they were comforting her, teaching her, or loving her they changed a lot of Cline’s life for the better.

Queen Of The Tiles: Book Review

Imagine, on a cold, rainy day sitting down in the family room, bundled up in a cozy blanket and playing a friendly game of Scrabble. To you Scrabble is an unopened box on a shelf, maybe a gift from a friend or something your parents thought you would like, nevertheless Scrabble is not something you ever think of until this rainy day moment arrives and you decide you want to play.

The book Queen Of The Tiles by Hanna Alkaf takes Scrabble to another level, by going into the mind of a Scrabble player named Najwa Bakri.

Fresh out of recovering from the traumatic death of her best friend, Trina Low, Najwa is back in the Scrabble competition that decides who is the ‘Queen of The Tiles.’ The story follows Najwa as she tries to uncover Trina’s mysterious death while also trying to become the Queen of The Tiles, herself.

Hanna Alkaf created a story that not only vividly describes what Scrabble means to the contestants, but also dives deep into the strategy and intelligence that is needed to play Scrabble.

I loved all the characters in the story (even if they did kinda suck sometimes) and I think Hanna Alkaf definitely developed them in the proper way. I especially liked how she made the antagonist so lovable until the reader finds out what the things they have done to get in Najwa’s way.

This book has many suspenseful moments and a mysterious twist ending I did not expect. By the end of the book it made sense how everything played out and the motives for each character to do what they did. I was very satisfied with the ending and give this book a 10/10 rating.

Bookmarks Mark the Spot

A bookmark is defined as: a strip of leather, cardboard, or other material used to mark one’s place in a book. Habitually, I blindly grab the item nearest to me to use as a bookmark. I mainly utilize hair holders, blankets, and even other books. I quickly realized this method causes me to often lose my page and items that I need. Paper, magnetic, and sticky-note bookmarks are some fun types of bookmarks that I learned about and wanted to share with people.

The type of bookmark that most people are familiar with is the simple rectangular paper bookmark. You just slide it in the inside corner of the page you are reading and then you can close the book. Sometimes, there may be a string connected to the top. While this type of bookmark is very easy to come by sometimes it may fall out of the book.

Magnetic bookmarks are a more secure way to mark a page. It is made by two pieces of magnets and a material that goes on the sides and holds them together by the top. The two magnets slide onto each side of your page, so you can easily find your spot. However, these bookmarks tend to be more expensive than paper bookmarks.

Sticky-notes also make great bookmarks, because they never fall out and you may already use them but there are many other ways to fold and bend them into a fun shape. For example, you can make a cute heart or a fun animal.

Personally, I like using the rectangular paper bookmarks, because they are easy to make and use, but I’ve tried out all of these and they are all really fun. I hope you consider making use of these ideas, because bookmarks are really helpful.

The Fear: Book Analysis on Setting

A popular book by Natasha Preston, called The Fear, is about a teenage girl witnessing her peers getting murdered in their most feared ways by a serial killer. The setting is winter in a small fishing town, where everyone knows everyone. The setting plays a major role in the story and plot because if it was set in an urban or suburban area many factors of the story would change.

The killer murders the victim when not many people are around. This would change in a big city, because places like New York are densely populated. Even if not many people were around there would be at least one person driving a car or walking a dog nearby to see. The small fishing town during the winter is the perfect place for this because at night the roads are dark and filled with snow which would keep people from leaving their houses.

Another way the setting helps the story is the killer’s hideout. They use a farm and another build in the woods to hide many things. In a big city a barn would be very noticeable and would stand out against all the buildings. As described in the book, the killer’s place is not on a map because nobody owned it, in a suburban or urban area the barn would’ve been bought very easily. The small town allows the barn to stay hidden and off the map.

Natasha Preston was smart to choose the setting to be a small fishing town instead of a big city or the suburbs. The town helps hide many things that could be seen in a big city, such as the victims and the killer’s hideout.

The Fear by Natasha Preston is available to check out from the Mission Viejo Library.
