Poached: Inside the Dark World of Wildlife Trafficking

Recently, I read a book called Poached: Inside the Dark World of Wildlife Trafficking. It was written by Rachel Love Nuwer, and it explores the illegal wildlife trade. Wildlife trafficking is  a crime that involves the illegal trading of animals, plants, and their products. I found this book both interesting and informative.

In Poached, the author explores a variety of aspects of the illegal wildlife trade—literally! She travels to foreign countries such as Vietnam and China and interviews poachers, sellers, and buyers; exploring the issue of wildlife trafficking from all angles. This is a book that really emphasizes the human side of the issue. Nuwer focuses on individual people and their role in wildlife trafficking. Zooming in allowed me to get a deeper, more personal look at one of the world’s most profitable crimes.

One thing I loved about this book is that Nuwer avoids oversimplifying the issue. While some may have taken a black-and-white approach, she treats the issue delicately and acknowledges the variety of factors that contribute to trade. Different financial and cultural aspects contribute heavily to wildlife trafficking. The fact that someone may participate in the illegal wildlife trade does not necessarily correlate with their individual character. For example, Nuwer speaks to a poacher in a rural part of Vietnam suffering from acidic water and soil, frequent fires, and low spirits. People in this area often make less than $1,000 a year. This particular poacher chose the profession due to the relatively high monetary potential in order to support his family. However, he does not enjoy his job. He often suffers from bouts of malaria and wishes he could do something else, “Eleven to thirteen dollars per trip [as a forest guide], and I’d quit hunting” (p. 21).

Overall, I would recommend this read to anyone who loves wildlife, is interested in conservation, or is just looking for an informative read.

The Lottery: A Classic That Hasn’t Lost Its Kick

“Horrible”

“Superbly Contrived”

“Cancel My Subscription”

These were all reactions to Shirley Jackson’s infamous short story, The Lottery. Originally published in The New Yorker magazine in 1948, this story has been haunting minds for generations. When my mom was around my age, she read The Lottery in her 8th grade English class. According to her, she found it eye opening, “I was amazed at how much suspense and curiosity a writer could evoke in just a handful of pages.” After she explained to me more about the story and author’s influence, I was interested in giving it a read. I checked out a book containing an anthology of Shirley Jackson’s short stories from the library.

Flipping to the table of contents, I located The Lottery and began to read. The Lottery is a story about a yearly lottery event held in a rural American town. The purpose of the lottery is to ensure a good harvest, but how the lottery achieves this is unclear until the end of the story. At its heart, the Lottery is a cautionary tale about the dangers of blindly following tradition and adopting a mob mentality.

The title alone is foreboding, especially when you have heard people’s previous reactions to the story. This short story is so influential that even Stephen King was inspired by it. He states that, “I read it in the study hall, back at good old Lisbon High School. My first reaction: Shock. My second reaction: How did she do that?” Later, he adapted The Lottery into his short story, Rainy Season

As I closed the book, I found that it was very impactful for a short story. The writing invoked a lot of suspense, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a quick but thought provoking read. If you are interested in reading it for yourself, (which I highly suggest as it only takes 5 minutes) you can find a free digital/audio copy here at: The New Yorker.

The Benefits of Norovirus

Currently, Americans are experiencing a huge outbreak of Norovirus (also known as the Winter Vomiting Disease). This means that many of us may be experiencing the effects of this virus now, recently, or in the near future. If you are sick at home like me, it can be tough to miss school or other activities. However, I have managed to scrape up a list of a few minor benefits* of having Norovirus.

Try New Things

When you have Norovirus, you can use the times you aren’t curled up in a ball to try new shows, books, movies, or games. This can be a great way to alleviate boredom and distract from how terrible you feel. You may even discover some new interests!

Get Work Done

Even though you can’t go to school, you can use your off time to catch up on some of the things on your “to do” list. For example, I’m writing this article while home sick with Norovirus! This might sound counter-intuitive since by missing school, you are guaranteeing yourself some make up work later. But if you dont want to be playing catch-up when you get back to school, try emailing your teachers asking for missed work ahead of time. This way, you can work on it at home.

Spend Time With Family

Chances are, if you have Norovirus, your family has it too (Norovirus is highly contagious). This means that you can spend time with them while you are all at home. Just make sure to keep a little distance– Norovirus mutates and you could re-infect them or yourself!

Practice Positivity.

I admit, this one may be harder to accomplish while you are puking your guts out, but there are still ways to keep positive. Remember that the symptoms of Norovirus typically only last 1-3 days, so in 72 hours, you will most likely be feeling better.

In the end, life is full of ups and downs. Even in a situation like this, we can see how every cloud has a (however small) silver lining. I hope you enjoyed this article. To those who are sick right now: I hope you feel better!

AI: the Good and the Bad

From customizing your Spotify feed to helping you with your school work, AI can be super helpful! However, AI is becoming a controversial topic. Here are the pros and cons of AI.

AI Is Great Because:

  1.  AI is a learning tool. AI programs like Grammarly, Khan Academy, Duolingo, and Quizlet are effective learning tools helping people all over the world. I would bet that you or someone you know has used Duolingo to learn a new language. Did you know that a 2021 study by Duolingo Research revealed that 34 hours of Duolingo use is equivalent to a full semester of college-level language instruction?
  2. AI makes our lives easier. AI is used for repetitive jobs like data sorting that would take a human hours to do. According to Forbes, “With a well-crafted prompt, ChatGPT can help you eliminate hours of repetitive work in mere seconds.”
  3. AI improves the quality of life for disabled people. From self-driving cars that can allow people to get around easier, to glasses that caption the world for the deaf–AI fosters inclusivity.
  4. AI makes healthcare better. Google’s DeepMind developed an AI system that diagnoses eye diseases as accurately as leading ophthalmologists: “Our AI system can quickly interpret eye scans from routine clinical practice with unprecedented accuracy. It can correctly recommend how patients should be referred for treatment for over 50 sight-threatening eye diseases as accurately as world-leading expert doctors.”  AI health tech saves lives!

AI Is Not So Great Because:

  1. AI makes mistakes. AI isn’t perfect.  A recent study from Purdue University found that ChatGPT, a popular AI app, presents wrong answers 52% of the time. If using ChatGPT to aid your research, you may find that your facts are false.
  2. AI takes jobs. Vinod Khosla, co-founder of Sun Microsystems, predicts “80 percent of all jobs will be eliminated” because of AI.
  3. AI harms the environment. AI gains its strength from thousands of computers housed in data centers. These centers are constantly operated, leading to a huge amount of energy being consumed. According to Reuters, “The surprising growth in power demand driven by the rise of artificial intelligence and cloud computing is being met in the near-term by fossil fuels like natural gas, and even coal, because the pace of clean-energy deployments is moving too slowly to keep up.” AI is playing a big role in increasing greenhouse gas emissions.
  4. AI distorts reality. AI can be used to generate fake audio or video recordings of people. When what you see with your eyes or hear with your ears can no longer be trusted or do not match reality, the truth becomes hard to discern.

Conclusion:

AI is helpful in many ways, but also has its faults. As time passes, technology improves, so while there are some large problems currently with AI, in the future, they may not be as pronounced. In the end, in order to truly understand the impact something will have, we just need to wait and see.

Should Cellphones be Banned in School?

Starting in 2025, the LA Unified School District will be enacting a ban on cellphones at school. Cellphone bans are nothing new; in May of 2023, the state of Florida passed a ban on phones in school as well. While some people support these bans, others are more reluctant. In this article, I will be breaking down both sides of the case on phones in school.

Why we should ban phones:

  • Phones are considered highly addictive. A scholarly journal published by the National Library of Medicine reported that on average, 16% of adolescents are addicted to their phones. In addition to this, addicitoncenter.com states that, “A recent study scanned participants’ brains with a phone addiction and discovered a change in their brain’s grey matter. According to the researchers, the physical shape and size of their brains resembled that of drug users.”
  • It’s a distraction. Since phones are addictive, students can easily be distracted by their addiction in class. Even if they aren’t addicted, it’s hard to resist a buzzing phone. “Approximately 40% of public schools report moderate to severe negative impacts on student learning and on teacher and staff morale when students use their electronic devices without permission. Many teachers report that students being distracted with their cellphones is a major problem in their classrooms… The presence of smart phones may reduce cognitive capacity, especially for those highly addicted to their phones, and notifications disrupt focus and attention. Further, there is a negative association between time spent on smartphones and academic performance,” says KFF (affiliated with Kaiser Hospital).” A common reason for cellphone bans is the high risk of distracting from schoolwork, in turn reducing grades.
  • They are harmful to mental health. The National Institute of Health says that, “Numerous studies have found that addiction and depression often go hand in hand, and that addiction increases the risk of depression and is an important predictor of depression. A 4-year follow-up study confirms that Internet addiction is a stable cause of depression.” Increased awareness about student mental health have led to concerns about the impacts of smart devices.

Why we shouldn’t ban phones:

  • They are a learning tool. While phones can be distracting in class, they can also be great learning tools. “Cell phones give students access to tools and apps that can help them complete and stay on top of their class work. These tools can also teach students to develop better study habits, like time management and organization skills,” claims Oxford Learning.
  • Cellphones are a way for schools to help students prepare for adulthood. Statistics show that around 97% of the adult population possess cellphones in the US. Even if phones may be a distraction, students need to learn how to responsibly use these devices so that they can be successful as an adult. “A research scientist in the center for Health and Happiness, argues that more flexible classroom policies [regarding cell phones] can create opportunities for teaching tech-literacy and self-regulation,” explains Harvard Gazette
  • Helpful for communication, especially in emergencies. Another reason many parents cite for keeping phones in class is the purpose of communication and safety. Many phones have built in tracking devices that parents use to keep track of their kids. In addition, phones can be very useful in a school emergency as they possess the ability to contact emergency services. “We aren’t texting our kids memes or asking them what the latest TikTok trend is,” National Parents Union president Keri Rodrigues says in a statement. “Cellphone bans fail to take into consideration the tragic, real-life scenarios that unfortunately play out all too often in schools. And schools have yet to improve communication with us.”

In conclusion, there are many pros and cons to having cellphones in schools. There is no right answer for how to proceed on this policy. Only time will tell if phone bans even end up being effective. What do you think? Should phones be banned in schools?

From Pop Stars to Superheros: 2024 Halloween Costume Predictions

Starbucks has started offering pumpkin spice. The air is slightly cooler. Spirit Halloweens are beginning to spring up. Do you know what this means? It’s Halloween season! Fans of the holiday have already begun to plan their outfits for the big night. Throughout the ages, there have always been a few costumes each year that are most popular. Sure, ghosts and witches will always be classics, but the attention of the public usually has been held by specific costumes influenced by popular culture that year. Last year, we saw a large amount of Barbies due to the recent release of The Barbie Movie. According to this article, in 1951, Alice from Alice In Wonderland was the way to go. The same article also states that in 1979, Superman was all the rage. This got me wondering. What would the most popular costumes this year be?

Here are my predictions for the top Halloween costumes of 2024:

  1. Betelgeuse/Beetlejuice
No, I’m not talking about the star! The new movie in the Beetlejuice franchise (Beetlejuice Beetlejuice), came to the big screen at the beginning of September. It is a sequel to the original movie, which came out in 1998. Viewers will definitely be inspired by the title character’s iconic stripe suit and crazy hair.
  2. Deadpool and Wolverine
Deadpool and Wolverine was released to great anticipation in July. I think that this duo will be a very popular costume among Marvel fans. We may see a few people dressing up as only Deadpool or Wolverine, but It will be more common to see pairs of the two characters.
  3. Chappell Roan
Chappell Roan has probably been all over your For You Page recently. Not only is her music incredibly catchy, her stage costumes and presence are breath-taking. While my personal favorite is her Statue of Liberty or butterfly looks, all of her outfits are jaw-dropping. Expect lots of glitter this Halloween.
  4. Jojo Siwa
You may still associate Jojo Siwa with bows and rainbows, but this past year, she went through a total change of style. Expect to see her “Karma” music video look everywhere.
  5. Olympics (Specifically Raygun)
The 2024 Summer Olympics were a thrill to watch. We saw some of our favorite athletes competing for gold. Athletes are always a common costume, and the Olympics will magnify that. One specific athlete I predict will be a common costume is Raygun. The Australian breakdancer was all over the internet for her controversial break dancing style.
  6. Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders
AMERICA’S SWEETHEARTS: Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders appeared on Netflix in early summer. It provides insight into the life of a Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader and also follows the history of the coveted position. The series has been trending on Netflix since it was released in June, so naturally dressing as a Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader will be a popular choice this Halloween.

Those are my predictions for the most popular costumes this year. What are you planning on being this Halloween?
