Why Is Eating Breakfast Important?

Life can be busy and chaotic, especially in the mornings, when the alarm goes off and there are so many things to do that it’s overwhelming, it’s really common for people just to skip breakfast. However, this is not a healthy habit. Eating breakfast is the most important meal of the day for a reason. According to Eric Romm, a professor in the departments of epidemiology and nutrition at Harvard, when a person skips breakfast, their calories are evenly spread out throughout the day during breakfast, lunch, and dinner. However, when a person skips eating breakfast, there’s going to be an uneven distribution of calorie intake throughout the day because when a person skips breakfast, the calories not eaten during breakfast will cause a person to eat more of those calories during lunch and dinner. This causes a spike in glucose and insulin levels, which increases the chances of obesity or type 2 diabetes. According to studies by Harvard, males who skip breakfast have a 20% increased likelihood of having a heart attack, while females who skip breakfast have a 20% increased likelihood of getting Type 2 diabetes. Not skipping breakfast is an example of a healthy habit that can create a healthier lifestyle. 

Not only does eating breakfast lower the risks of health complications in the future, but it also helps with present problems that people face all the time. A study from the National Institutes of Health, or NIH, states that when a person consumes breakfast, it improves cognitive performance through improved memory performance and attention, and alertness. This can be very beneficial in many ways. Imagine having to take a school test or having a report to do for work. With an increased cognitive performance, it could make it less difficult to do those tasks. Studies show that students who incorporate breakfast into their daily routine tend to have a higher boost in academics compared to those who skip breakfast. As well, consuming breakfast improves mood and behavior, which may seem small, but has a big difference. If consuming breakfast improves mood behavior, a bad start to your day can change into a less stressful one. 

However, while eating breakfast has many benefits, if done wrong, it could have completely opposite effects. It is important to balance your breakfast composition so that you consume the right amount of nutrients in order to have the positive effects. Not skipping breakfast doesn’t mean eating chocolate every day in the morning. Breakfast should be eaten with fulfilling foods that give you energy, such as a breakfast with a mix of foods that contain protein, fiber, etc.

How To Pass Your Permit Test

Turning 16 years old can be a checkpoint or a milestone in some people’s lives. After all, many changes come along with turning 16. For example, permit life. It’s a time when many teens are working hard to get their license by driving with instructors, parents, etc. If you’re 16-17 years old, it is guaranteed that you have heard people in your grade begin talking about getting their permit/license or practicing for their license. However, before getting a license, it is required to get a permit first by passing a permit test. Some people may be confident in taking the permit test, and some people may not. When I took my permit test, I was extremely anxious and worried that I had waited all that time in line for nothing, but don’t worry. Here are some tips that I can give as a teen who passed the permit test on the first try with 45/47 correct. 

Study the Handbook

This is the most important thing you need to pass your permit test. This is your study guide—your golden ticket. If you just study the handbook, it’s almost certain that you’re going to pass. This is because the handbook is basically what you’re being tested on for the permit test. The handbook covers the basic rules of driving and the things you need to know before driving really well. If you study the handbook well, you don’t need to do anything else, and you can do well. You can find the handbook on the DMV website and download it as a PDF. You can also find audio readings online that you can listen to as you are reading.

Practice Quizzes/Tests

Take as many practice quizzes as you can. When I was studying for my permit test, I did lots of practice quizzes and practice permit tests, and these helped a lot. Before I started studying, I took a practice test to see where I was at and took note of what I got right and wrong. Then each time I studied, I did practice tests and quizzes along with it. There are many of these online. Just search up “DMV Practice Test/Quiz,” and just take as many tests as necessary. You can even download apps from the App Store. For me, I used this app called “DMV Practice Test” with a green logo and a car. The app also had the handbook, which I thought was useful. Then it had a section of practice quizzes and a section of practice tests. These were so helpful, and they helped me pass the permit test. 

Although these tips are useful, it is also crucial to get good sleep and eat well before the permit test, especially if you are really waiting in line. It is hard to focus when you are tired, and it makes it way easier for your brain to work during the test. But remember, even if you fail the permit test, you can always try again, and you shouldn’t be too hard on yourself. Trust me, don’t stress too much; you’ll be fine. Good luck!

Why Journaling Matters

You see journals everywhere. People post it all over social media, and your therapist might even recommend it! Even the most historically significant individuals, such as Leonardo da Vinci, Frida Kahlo, Marie Curie, and Albert Einstein, kept journals. The reason behind this isn’t just because it’s trendy – it’s because journaling is a powerful tool used for improving well-being, self-growth, and creativity. 

  1. Journaling Helps Clear Your Head

Imagine after a long day, you’re feeling all sorts of emotions: anger, sadness, anxiety,  and you have no one to talk to or just don’t have the energy to talk to anyone. Journaling can help with that. Especially at this time in the world right now, things can get very chaotic and overwhelming, and this can take a toll on your health. Life is already full of surprises, and it’s extremely easy to feel all sorts of emotions. Journaling helps you navigate those emotions. When you just want to express your feelings or vent, you can do that in a journal. Bottling your emotions can be harmful  – think of a balloon. A balloon can’t expand forever, and eventually it can’t take too much and it’ll burst. That’s the same case for us. We can’t hold onto things forever. We can’t just store all our emotions in our heads because it’ll end up building up, and eventually, we’ll explode. Journaling helps release stress and anxiety, and it’s fantastic for improving mental health. 

  1. Journals Help You Express Yourself

When you’re journaling, you’re taking your thoughts and feelings and writing them down in your journal.  You’re not doing it to impress anyone or anything, so it shows your true self and a real you. Your journal is your canvas, and you can write anything in your journal. You don’t always have to write about your day if you don’t want to. You can just write a letter to yourself or make a page just about you. A journal is about expression. It can even help you discover yourself. Every time you journal, it encourages you to reflect on your thoughts, which can help you discover things about yourself that you didn’t think about previously. For example, let’s say you journal after you got into an argument with someone dear to you. Journaling encourages reflection, so maybe as you’re journaling, you start to realize, “Was I too harsh?” or “Maybe I overreacted.” This allows you to think differently and helps you navigate your problems because it gives you a new perspective. You can think about how to handle things differently. When you’re journaling, you’re being vulnerable, and this pushes you to learn about parts of yourself that you might not have noticed before. 

  1. Journals Are Like Time Capsules

If you start journaling now and get into this consistent habit of journaling, you’ll have so many journal entries to look back on when you’re older. You can read back on your old journal entries and reflect on how far you’ve come and grown as a person. Your journey might be sad or happy, but it shows how things have changed or stayed the same throughout your life. Maybe you’ll become a completely different person, and your journal is a reflection of that. Your journal is living proof of your growth as you navigate through your life’s triumphs and challenges. 

So, how do you start? Well, it’s simple, really. All you need is somewhere to write on. You can use your notes app on your phone, an app for journaling, a notebook, or pieces of paper, and you can even use Google Docs. Anywhere you want, as long as you can write on it. Next, try to be consistent. Personally, I am not consistent with journaling because I find it difficult to stay consistent. However, if you want to try to stay consistent, it is suggested that you set a schedule for journaling. It can be when you wake up every day or before you sleep, and it doesn’t matter if it’s 5 minutes or 30 minutes, there’s no limit. It’s okay if you’re not consistent with journaling. Just write whenever and whatever to your heart’s content.

Why is Pacific Coast Highway so interesting, you ask?

The Pacific Coast Highway has many diverse wildlife in its natural habitats. So Keep an eye out for California sea lions basking in the sun, dolphins playing in the waves, or even migrating whales breaching offshore. This scenic drive provides many opportunities for outdoor adventures like hiking, kayaking in serene coves, or simply relaxing on sandy beaches while watching a beautiful sunset-painted sky.

My family takes this drive almost every summer. I can always find new and exciting things to write about in my travel journal. The beautiful coastline with rugged cliffs, crashing waves, and golden beaches creates an awe-inspiring and humbling natural scenery. Each turn reveals a new vista that captivates the senses of and appreciation for the raw power of nature. 

Traveling along the Pacific Coast Highway, you’ll see charming coastal towns perched on the cliffs to expand the paramount view of the Pacific Ocean.

My favorite places to stop and stay awhile are Santa Barbara and Big Sur, and sometimes, my family would stop by to visit the Getty Villa Museum. It’s free, and there is so much to learn and see. Getty Villa Museum is a Greek and Roman antiquities housed in a re-created Roman country home. It’s a gorgeous place with art from the Middle Ages to anything in between.

Santa Barbara is a city filled with art, culture, food, and, of course, famous for its spas. My mom’s favorite place is Soul Care, a wellness spa where you can relax and indulge your senses. 

As the summer sun continues to shine, there’s still plenty of time to plan a memorable vacation along the picturesque Pacific Coast Highway. From the fascinating Museum showcasing Greek and Roman antiquities to the vibrant city of Santa Barbara and Malibu with its rich culture and relaxing spas, there is something for every traveler to enjoy. Relaxing Hobbies to Help You Unwind During Finals

Finals suck. The massive projects worth ⅓ of your grade, the crazy long essays that have to be a test, everyone wearing pajamas and giving up. Yup, finals: everyone’s favorite time. 

But, finals don’t have to suck this year. Here are some relaxing hobbies to help you calm down and enjoy life during this hard time.

  • Coloring! Get out your sketchbook and draw, or print some cute coloring pages online and color them in. This is a perfect hobby because NOTHING has to be perfect, you can make it as messy or as perfect as you want. Coloring is shown to help improve your focus and boost your creativity, so definitely consider coloring this May.

  • Baking! Who doesn’t love a delicious warm chocolate chip cookie, or an amazing decorated slice of cake? Take some time to bake sweet treats for yourself, your friends, and your families. Not only is this a great hobby because you can tune out to some music and just follow a recipe (which takes almost no brain power), but you also get to eat your incredible creations afterwards.

  • Gardening! Personally, I can’t really garden, but this is a proven hobby to help people destress. By going outside and connecting with nature, you’re letting your brain drift away. This helps your cognitive function, which then helps you with testing.

  • Literally anything you want. Any hobby of yours can help you keep your mind off of testing. Whether you’re playing video games or biking, just doing something you enjoy will help you feel better.

    Take care of yourself this testing season. Try your best to get around 8 hours of sleep. I know it’s hard with sports and clubs, but by doing this you will feel less exhausted and your brain WILL WORK BETTER. Don’t stay up all night studying, because you will eventually fall asleep and not retain anything. So, ENJOY YOURSELF and STOP STRESSING.

Steam Stations: Biology Day

Earlier in March, the Teen Advisory Board (TAB), along with other teen volunteers, hosted the final Steam Station out of three. What are STEAM Stations? These Stations have been a series of STEAM based events that the library’s youth team have helped to develop. We based all of our activities on the acronym, STEAM which stands for: Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. After first hosting Coding Day  and then Engineering Day, we hosted the final event: Biology Day! Biology Day was a fantastic end to the series with various fun activities.

Like our previous events, there were three different stations:

The first station was our fingerprint lab! Participants would be able to use ink pads to cover their fingers which they would then press onto a balloon. In order to magnify their fingerprint, they would blow the balloon up and by using identification sheets, participants could identify which kind of fingerprint they have (Loop, arch, whorl, etc).

At the second station, participants could go and make art with their own fingerprints. Using a variety of colored ink, they would cover their fingers with them just as they did in the last station to press them onto paper to create their own art! 

Finally, participants were given owl pellets, tools, and an identification sheet so they could dissect real owl pellets. As they picked apart the pellets, they could extract small bones and identify what bones they found by using the identification sheet. Both children and adults had a good time extracting bones together, making a fun bonding experience.  

I say this final STEAM Station was a success, just like our previous two Stations. Participants had a lot of fun making their own art and especially discovering bones. It was also nice to go into the community and hold this event at the Potocki Center of the Arts nearby the library; the outside space was warm and sunny, allowing our event-goers to experience a great day in nature which was perfect for Biology Day. 

Everyone had a great time out in nature jumping around to each different station. Some stations took longer than others, especially the owl pellet activity, which allowed participants to jump around to different stations in the meantime. It was wonderful to see everyone have fun with their fingerprint balloons and share their fingerprint artwork with each other. It was especially great to see individuals working together to find and identify bones as they dug through owl pellets. All in all, these stations were a fun learning opportunity for everyone. 

This concludes our three STEAM Stations! It was wonderful to host these events and to see new and familiar faces from the library and community who were able to attend and experience these STEAM Stations. I hope that in the future if we ever host these again, that both familiar and new people come to enjoy what we have in store.

El mural “The Whale Walk”

Si has visitado Doheny Beach, debes saber del mural “The Whale Walk” que ha adornado el piso por décadas. Completo con ballenas gigantescos y magesticos, el Whale Walk es famoso tras California y es un símbolo de orgullo.

El “Whale Walk” fue creado en 1999. Pero, el año pasado, pintaron las ballenas otra vez. Con la ayuda de Jim Sherpa, alumnos de San Clemente High School, y alumnos de Cal State Long Beach, las ballenas fueron restauradas a su gloria. Creo que el mensaje que está mural tan bonito está tratando de expresar es que las ballenas, y el océano, son demasiados importantes. Las ballenas representan poder y sabiduría, así que el mural expresa el poder del océano. Además, creo que el mural está tratando de enseñar la importancia de cuidar nuestros océanos porque las ballenas están en peligro y debemos tratar de salvarlos. 

Aunque las ballenas son animales llenas de paz, más de un millón de ballenas mueren cada año. Si queremos ver estas criaturas mágicas en el futuro, tenemos que hacer nuestra parte. Por favor, la próxima vez que vayas a la playa Dohena, recoleges su basura para asegurar que nuestros océanos estén limpios y que sigan bellos por años!

Best Beaches in Southern California

As Spring Break comes to a close, I reflect on all of the great memories I had over the past week. For me, Spring Break is a time to hang out with loved ones and to relax. The best place to do both of these things (in my opinion), is meeting up at the beach. As a local, I try to go to the beach as regularly as I can. There is no better feeling than taking a dip in crystal-clear water on a hot, sunny day. Below are four of my favorite beaches to visit in the springtime and summer.

  1. Heisler Park: This is my all-time favorite beach to visit. Most people and tourists flock to the main beach in Laguna. However, Heisler is more tucked away and less crowded. I’ve found that this beach consistently has clear water. Another perk of this beach is that you can also explore tidal pools and rock formations on the beach. The waves at Heisler Park can vary in size; sometimes they are mellow but quite frequently there are bigger waves. Tip: There is free parking across the street, and the walk isn’t far at all.

2. Treasure Island Beach: Though Treasure Island can often be busy at times, it is still one of my favorites to go to. This beach is very picturesque, the small staircase you walk down brings you to a beach with panoramic views of the ocean. Personally, I enjoy this beach because you can typically find an area to sit in since there is a lot of space. Like Heisler, Treasure Island has pretty water. Note: when I went to this beach, the waves were fairly small.

3. Salt Creek: Located in Dana Point, Salt Creek is one of the most popular beaches to go to in SOCAL—and for a good reason. I love this spot for watching the sunset and eating dinner. Salt Creek has a large grassy area where you can see many people having small picnics. If you enjoy walking or running, this is the beach to go to; there is a trail that goes along the beach. (If you want to run on the beach, it is about 3 miles from point to point.)

4. Victoria Beach: Victoria Beach is located in Laguna Beach (you can’t go wrong with Laguna). After parking, head down a small street that leads to Victoria Beach. When entering the beach, it looks like any other beach. However, if you walk down further to the right, you’ll see a medieval-esque tower that faces the ocean. Along your walk to the mini-castle, there is a small man-made pool that can be fun to wade in. One con to this beach is that it is very touristy; and extremely frustrating to find parking. Sometimes, you’ll have to park far away which will include a hilly walk to the beach. Nonetheless, Victoria Beach is stunning to visit and should be a staple when visiting beaches.

Best Art Inspiration Sites

Recently, I was painting with my friends and I searched up simple things to paint. In short, nothing was simple. So I decided to see if I could find a few websites to get inspiration of what to paint. To help others I decided to make a list of a few blogs/sites with the pros and cons of each one.

  1. Shihori Obata: This is one of my new favorite blogs because everything that the artist draws is really simple. There’s also step-by-step picture tutorials of drawings that are a bit more complicated. One of the only cons is that the site lags a little because of the advertisements. Overall I would rate is a 9/10.
  2. Hobbies Fun: Although I thought the title was a little silly there are tons of cute drawing ideas. My favorite things about this site are that it’s only drawings, there’s tutorials, and it’s really easy to navigate the site. Overall I would rate this site a 9.5/10.
  3. Pinterest: While this may seem obvious Pinterest is really a great app/site to find art inspiration. There’s video tutorials and also simple images to copy. Overall I would rate this site a 9/10

Inside Out 2 Movie experience at Cinépolis

On the first day of summer, the hottest day of the year, we all piled into our car and headed for the Cinépolis to watch Inside Out 2


This theater is very different than the typical theater. We bought the tickets online; no attendants would direct you to your seats. We went to the theater studio for our movie and found our seats. The server came and took our order for dinner before the movie started.

What, you said theater? Dinner inside a theater? Why yes, at this theater, you can order a full dinner and even alcoholic beverages, snacks, and everything else you fancy before the movie. The best part is the recliner padded leather seats, making the experience even more comfortable when watching the film.

After we were done, we ordered our food and got ready for dinner. The light was off, and the movie started playing. I was still determining what to expect since it’s a cartoon movie, which I didn’t think would be any different from the others. 

It was not a typical Pixar movie. The Inside Out 2 storyline picks up where the first movie left off, exploring new challenges in Riley’s adolescence. The way the film showed Riley’s external experiences with her inner struggles shows how human changes and growth shape one’s emotions, and it’s more critical in teenagers.

This combined approach not only entertains but also shows viewers a deeper understanding of everyday emotions through different stages of life. I especially love the little characters that are people’s emotions, such as Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust. 

The movie continues to explore the main character’s emotions, Riley, using these characters, delivering an intriguing journey that blends heartwarming moments with profound insights into typical teen emotions. Through characters like Joy, Sadness, Anger, Embarrassment, and Anxiety, we see the complexities of human emotions.

As expected from Pixar, the animation is stunning and imaginative, with vibrant colors and intricate details bringing Riley’s mind’s internal and external workings to life. Pixar was so good at showing abstract concepts like core memories, personality islands, and the subconscious, making it visually delightful and captivating for audiences of all ages from start to finish.

The film’s success would be due to its characters. They are animated figures with relatable personalities, each with arcs and quirks. My favorite character is Joy. She has infectious optimism and is one of those friends you want on your side. Sadness’s endearing vulnerability and other emotions’ unique traits make them entertaining but deeply relatable, something every one of us experiences as a teen.

The voice cast was outstanding in their performance, adding emotion, depth, and authenticity to these characters, making them much more relatable and real. Through these characters, Inside Out 2 lets us explore complex emotions and topics so that younger viewers can understand and make it engaging for adults. It explores complex issues like identity, changes, and the importance of emotional resilience.

Overall, Inside Out 2 is a worthy continuation of its predecessor, offering an exploration to entertain and teach us about our daily emotional struggles with our emotions. The stunning animation and fun and upbeat storyline make this film memorable and worthwhile to watch with families and friends, especially with your younger siblings.

Whether you’re a fan of the original or new to the world of Riley’s mind, Inside Out 2 is a must-watch. This movie will leave you thinking about your emotions and their complexities long after the film ends.
