Manga Introduction: Naruto, by Masashi Kishimoto

naruto_coverThis was my first ever manga I ever read. This is the manga series that got me hooked into the word of manga. Since then I have learned about many more.

Here are a few facts about Naruto:

  • Naruto was first published in September of 1999. It quickly became popular and now remains as one of the top 5 most popular manga in the world.
  • There are over 60 tankobon volumes(Manga books) each containing about 8-10 chapters per book. Each chapter is a full set of about 18-20 pages of black and white drawings.
  • Every week Naruto’s publisher magazine, Weekly Shonen Jump, publishes one chapter of Naruto.
  • Naruto, due to its popularity, has two anime series, both featuring over 200 episodes.

As you can see, Naruto is a rather large and popular manga series. In this manga series, ninjas are the ones who have most power in the land where the series happens. The series mainly focuses on Naruto Uzumaki, who is the main character. There are also many incredible main supporting characters.

Book Review: Stormbreaker, by Anthony Horowitz

stormbreakerAlex Rider’s story begins with a perfect life. Alex is a regular boy who is 14 years old. One night he is awoken by the chime of a doorbell and overhears that his uncle died mysteriously in a car crash. But the weird thing is that the cops were saying he was not wearing his seat belt. His uncle always enforced the rule that no matter what, you have to wear your seatbelt to Alex, and he always followed that rule too. Alex didn’t have enough information to believe the cops.

Alex decides to investigate and discovers that it wasn’t a car crash that killed his uncle– it was murder. At the car dump, he finds that one bullet from a sniper made a crisp circular hole in the glass window. An attempt on his own life kicks off the beginning of Alex’s adventures, and things really get complicated when he learns that his uncle was an MI6 agent– and he must get involved too.

I personally would recommend that this book should be read only if you are older than 12 years old. The reason why is that there is a little bit of violence it the book. Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz is a great read!

Book Review: Beowulf, A New Telling, by Robert Nye

beowulf_coverBeowulf is believed to be the first piece of English literature ever to be written. It was originally composed as an epic poem. This version was adapted in the form of a short novel.

In the beginning of the novel, Beowulf travels to the land of the Danes, to visit the king, Hrothgar. Hrothgar’s hall, Hall Heorot, had been under attack from Grendel, an evil monster, for many years. Because of this constant threat that no one had yet ceased, Hrothgar was indifferent of Beowulf’s arrival and declaration to fight Grendel.
However, Hrothgar would soon find that Beowulf is no ordinary hero. To fight Grendel, he uses no sword and does not formulate a plan. Will Beowulf still be able to defeat the monster without these vital things?

After the death of one of Hrothgar’s men, and the mysterious disappearance of Unferth, another of Hrothgar’s men, Beowulf follows Grendel’s mother’s sickly spoor into the Fen, an evil, swamp-like area on the edge of the Hall. To fight Grendel’s mother, he has to dive deep into a bottomless pool, with blood bubbles floating to the surface. Deeper and deeper he swims, until he is grabbed by Grendel’s mother.

Beowulf then tries to repeatedly hit the monster, to no avail. He feels helpless at the hands of this monster. Is it still possible for Beowulf to kill this hideous monster? Or will his fear paralyze him?

Despite his reputation in the land of the Danes, Beowulf does not feel he belongs there, and journeys back to his homeland. Once there, he is asked to be king, an offer which he declines, not wanting to take the throne when there is still an heir.

For the next few years, he lives peacefully tending bees like he did as a child. However, when the young king is killed, he must take the throne. He leads the country into a time of peace, during which he continues to tend his bees.

However, one fateful day, a slave wanders into the mountains seeking treasure in a prince’s burial chamber. This causes the firedrake to become enraged and swell to an enormous size, preventing the animal from exiting the burial chamber. Once the firedrake calms his temper and ventures outside, the monster wreaks havoc on the nearby houses, setting them on fire.

Beowulf, being king, knows he must take action. This time, with help, he formulates a plan to defeat the firedrake. He sets his bees in front of the entrance to the cave and steps inside to carry out his plan. Will Beowulf’s strategy work? Will he survive his last exploit?

Before reading this book, I had not heard anything good about the story. However, I thought the book was suspenseful and a good read overall. I would rate this novel a 9 out of 10.

Book Review: First Test, By Tamora Pierce

firsttest_coverGirls trying to be knights are not a new idea but, in the book, First Test, Tamora Pierce brings a whole new twist to it. The book is about the first year of Keladry of Mindelan’s page years as she works to become accepted for deciding to become the 2nd female knight in the medieval and fantastic realm,Tortall.

First Test is the first book of the Protector of the Small Quartet by Tamora Pierce. This series is only one of the many series that she has written.

The First Test is about Keladry of Mindelan, who is known as Kel, first year as a page. Kel tries to prove to pages’ training master, Lord Wyldon that she can do just as well as the other boys in training. Many people are against girls becoming knights and so she receives much pressure. On top of that she has to deal with the fact that she was raised in another part of the realm and has to adjust to the completely different Tortall culture. Her friend Nealan “Neal” of Queenscove helps her along the way.

First Test is a well written book. There is plenty of adventure and action in the story. The characters are well-developed and are believable. Kel, the main character, is not someone who seems unbelievably lucky or powerful. She in her own way does have fault and fears. This makes her connect more with the reader. This is the same with most of the characters. The author also incorporates things from other real life cultures and traditions.  Most authors who write in a medieval times setting usually take their ideas from Europe. Pierce actually incorporated some of the parts of the African culture and the Japanese culture into her story. This makes the story more interesting since there are more perspectives to see the story.

Overall this book is great for anyone who wants to have a strong girl protagonist as the main character. This has action and adventure as well. It might seem like a school story at first due to the very school like atmosphere of the page training but there is a whole lot more to it. The complete series itself, I would only recommend to older readers because it does deal with the maturing of girls, the changes they go through, and love. This is because of the growing age of the main character. This book is a good read for anyone, but there series is better for older readers. This is only my opinion. So read it for yourself and decide.

Book Review: Middleworld, by J&P Voelkel

middleworld_coverMiddleworld, the first book in The Jaguar Stones series by J & P Voelkel, is a very interesting and exciting book that many teens would enjoy. However, this book is directed towards boys more than girls. If you like action adventure books, this is for you, as it deals with a 14 year old boy named Max Murphy who lives in Boston.

One day, Max is mysteriously sent on a quest to the South American jungle to rescue his missing archeologist parents. Max has a very difficult time, as his biggest talent is playing video games, and he wants nothing to do with nature. On Max’s journey, he teams up with a witty and clever Mayan girl named Lola, who helps Max rescue his parents from the Mayan underworld.

Middleworld has a story within a story, and can be a little confusing in the beginning, as when Max goes to live with his uncle in South America, who Max thinks is in the banana business, but is really a smuggler. Also, Tiny Jim, the uncle’s right hand, seems to hate Max, but surprises the reader at the end of the book.  As this book draws to a close, all of these events will make sense.

There are many funny and scary moments in this book, making the book hard to put down; such as when Max finally faces the Mayan Lords of Death, and has to outsmart them, or when the Mayan villagers play a practical joke on Max by giving him very spicy stew to eat. This book also provides a lot of interesting background information on the Mayan people, and their relics and pyramids, so if one enjoys history, this book will be especially interesting.

Overall, Middleworld is a very exciting book, and I am really looking forward to reading the rest of the books in the series.  This book is definitely one that everybody should read, and once they start, I promise that they will not be able to put it down until they are finished.
