Book Review: The Brothers Hawthorne

Last weekend, I finished reading The Brothers Hawthorne by Jennifer Lynn Barnes. This book is an extension of her popular series, The Inheritance Games, a trilogy. Instead of focusing on Avery Grambs, the trilogy’s main character, The Brothers Hawthorne, hones in on the middle brothers Grayson and Jameson. The book describes the journey of Grayson protecting his (half) twin sisters from harm and the truth of his father’s death. Barnes writes about Jameson’s adventure of completing a series of games in England that his father challenges.

The Brothers Hawthorne is written from two points of view–Grayson’s and Jameson’s. I enjoyed this because it was interesting to see how the attitudes and behaviors of the two characters differed. This book was intriguing because there were many plot twists (and hints of suspense). Since the book switches to different points of view every couple of chapters, the author leaves important moments at cliffhangers. While at some points this was frustrating, it kept me invested in the book.

Though this book was exciting, it was slightly hard to follow since the point of view switches occasionally. Despite this, I recommend reading this book if you have already read the Inheritance Games. With some series, you can read the books out of order. However, this series isn’t like this–so if you haven’t read the books before The Brothers Hawthorne, you won’t understand half of the book. That being said, you should take the opportunity to read this book, as it is excellent.

Book Review – The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Avery Kylie Graham’s life gets flipped around when she unexpectedly inherits billions of dollars from Tobias Hawthorne and moves into the massive Hawthorne mansion. The only catch is she must stay in the home for a year to inherit the money. The Inheritance Games, a three book series, captured my attention from the first chapter and were impossible to put down. The cinematic descriptions of the house, the school Avery attends, and the places they vacation were absolutely gorgeous. But more importantly, the complex characters were each so unique and compelling.

When Avery first enters the Hawthorne Mansion she doesn’t realize what she’s going to have to endure to be able to take the money and live her life. Puzzles left by Tobias Hawthorne lie around every corner. I was on the edge of my seat each chapter, wondering what would happen next. Nothing about the plot was predictable at all. Usually, the second book in the series is inferior to the first, but I didn’t find it that way with this series. I was never bored reading The Inheritance Games.

The Hawthorne family was very messy, and Avery was just thrown into it. Besides the feuding aunts and the missing uncle, there are four sons who she becomes close with. There’s a sprinkling of romance with one of them, but it never overshadows the impeccable plot. Besides the family, Avery’s friends from her new private school are heavily involved. You may be thinking, with so many characters it might get confusing at times. But each character is so unique its impossible to lose your place.

I highly recommend checking out this series!

This book was also one of my favorite reads this year due to the sheer fact it’s sort of a different genre than what I normally go for. Typically, I’m a romance reader but this book had such high reviews I checked it out and fell in love.

It revolves around Avery Grambs who randomly inherits billions from billionaire, Tobias Hawthorne. She gets found by Tobias’ grandsons who investigate as to why their late grandfather left this mysterious girl his fortune. We get to see the story through Avery’s perspective and how she views all the Hawthorne brothers.

The plot is nothing like I’ve every seen before and had be intrigued on every aspect of the story. I would recommend to quite literally anyone. Good news, the is a trilogy so the story continues on and only gets better from here.

The Final Gambit

This is the third book in the Inheritance Games series. The series follows Avery after she is revealed to have been left a large inheritance from a billionaire named Tobias Hawthorne. Prior to the reading of his will, Avery had no idea who he was. Avery is a teenager whose mother died and her father left, leaving her kind half-sister Libby to take care of her.

She met Tobias Hawthorne only once in a completely random, coincidental way, and has not seen him since that brief encounter when she was much younger. Although Tobias Hawthorne has now died, he leaves behind the majority of his money and possessions to Avery – along with some hidden games. However, he left everything to Avery with one condition: that she stay in Hawthorne House for one full year. Then, once she turns 18, the money and possessions will legally be hers, as long as she fulfills this condition. During this year, Avery will face many threats against both her own life and the lives of those she cares about. Meanwhile, the question remains: why Avery? Tobias Hawthorne had four grandsons: Nash, Grayson, Jameson, and Xander. It was expected that Grayson would receive the fortune, not someone unknown like Avery. Even now, months later, Avery has no idea why she was chosen to receive the inheritance.

This is an exciting book with many puzzles and mysteries to solve. There were a lot of plot twists and I definitely was not anticipating the ending of this book. I really enjoyed reading this entire series. I would recommend this book to those who like adventure, action, and romance books.

The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Avery is an average, but intelligent, girl from Connecticut. Her mother died, and her father couldn’t care less about her, but her half-sister Libby (same father, different mother) cares deeply about Avery. One day, however, Avery receives an invitation to the reading of the will of the late Tobias Hawthorne, who she discovers has a net worth of 46 billion dollars. She is both surprised and confused when she receives the majority of Tobias Hawthorne’s vast fortune, despite never having known him, or even heard of him and his family, until now. However, it is revealed that Tobias Hawthorne left a puzzle behind for them to solve. Meanwhile, there are still some people who are upset about Avery’s newfound inheritance and seek to get rid of her in any way possible. She now has no idea who is really on her side and who seeks to get rid of her. Avery is now not only facing a difficult puzzle with vague clues, but she must also now watch out for any attempts others may take to harm her.

I liked this book because of the constant suspense and the unexpected events. This was a very unpredictable book, and there were multiple riddles presented by the clues. I enjoyed attempting to solve those puzzles and following along as the characters figured out what everything meant.

The Inheritance Games is part of a series consisting of 2 books, with the third book being released later this year. They all follow the same storyline, of the aftermath of Avery receiving the unexpected and large inheritance.
