Book Review: Duke, by Kirby Larson

duke_coverDog. A man’s best friend.

The book Duke by Newbery Honor winning author, Kirby Larson, just came out in bookstores everywhere.

The year is 1944, the world is at war… Americans vs. Nazis. Both sides needed help from their home country as much as they needed each other.

Hobie Hanson is a boy in Seattle who owns a German shepherd who is very well trained and has great agility. Whenever Hobie goes for a ride on his bike, Duke, the German shepherd, comes along. He is very loyal to his owner.

When Hobie rides home one day with Duke running along he meets a man. His name was Mr.Rasmussen, he works for “Dogs for defense.” After Hobie shows the man how Duke can do great tricks, Mr.R gives Hobie his card. Mr.R’s dog, Ludwig, was going to go into war and Mr.R asks Hobie if he wants to lend Duke to the marines. After a long time thinking, Hobie agrees as long as he would get his best friend back as soon as possible.

When Duke leaves, Hobie and his family is struck with sadness. After couple of weeks, he gets a letter from Sargent Marv saying that Duke is happy, and he is having a fun time training and learning new skills. Hobie is now more happy knowing that his friend is safe.

Ever since the first letter, Sarg. Marv consistently sends letters to Hobie until there is a sudden break… After a long wait Hobie gets a letter saying that when Sarg. Marv’s general said “all clear,” Duke’s ears perked up and he suddenly started barking, and that day Duke saved the life’s of many people. When Sarg. Marv yelled everyone to get to cover, seeing that Duke was barking, soon after a spray of bullets passed over Marv’s and Duke’s heads… Did the hit Duke and Marv? Did they live? Did Hobie ever get to see his best friend ever again?

You will have to read this book to find out.

Review: I would definitely rate this book a 10/10. It is really vivid and a movie was always forming through my head as I read the book. I would recommend this for all ages, and EVERYONE should read this amazing story.

Book Review: Stormbreaker, by Anthony Horowitz

stormbreakerAlex Rider’s story begins with a perfect life. Alex is a regular boy who is 14 years old. One night he is awoken by the chime of a doorbell and overhears that his uncle died mysteriously in a car crash. But the weird thing is that the cops were saying he was not wearing his seat belt. His uncle always enforced the rule that no matter what, you have to wear your seatbelt to Alex, and he always followed that rule too. Alex didn’t have enough information to believe the cops.

Alex decides to investigate and discovers that it wasn’t a car crash that killed his uncle– it was murder. At the car dump, he finds that one bullet from a sniper made a crisp circular hole in the glass window. An attempt on his own life kicks off the beginning of Alex’s adventures, and things really get complicated when he learns that his uncle was an MI6 agent– and he must get involved too.

I personally would recommend that this book should be read only if you are older than 12 years old. The reason why is that there is a little bit of violence it the book. Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz is a great read!

Book Review: The Quantum Prophecy

quantum-prophecy-theThe Quantum Prophecy is the first book in an amazing series called The New Heroes. These books are engaging and the keep you hooked on for eternity. The author who created this marvelous series, Michael Carroll, has written many books that have been big hits, mainly in the fantasy genre. Michael is still writing more books for The New Heroes series right now. However, the books I have read so far have been so exciting!

As an introduction to the first book, Colin and Danny are best friends. They are just regular kids at a regular school… until they find out something that changes their life forever. At age 12, they find out that they are super humans. Both of them have enhanced powers; for Colin it is ultimate strength and for Danny it is lighting speed. They save the world together as a team with amazing abilities. Colin’s superhero name is Power and Danny is not called by anything special.

Colin’s family and Danny’s family moves to Sakkara, a military base for super humans.  At Sakkara, they meet many other super humans such as Renata. Renata, also known as Diamond, has the power to crystalize anything on the planet she wants– even the whole planet if needed. Butler, also known as Bubble, has the power to create a force field that can hold out a force of any kind. One day, Danny’s fake dad, Façade, captures him, Danny thinking that Façade is his real dad. Façade posed as Danny’s dad, but Danny’s real dad is Quantum. Quantum works to enhance a power drainer. Quantum has the ability to see the future, and he sees Danny leading an army in the future. He also sees that everyone dies as a result of the war. To prevent this, he decides to drain the powers of his son. Once one of them is hooked to the power drainer, their powers will be gone forever– and Danny is forced to make a life-altering decision.

The Quantum Prophecy is a must-read. I cannot imagine my life if I had never read this book. I recommend it for ages 10-18. I enjoyed the books and I hope you enjoy them as much as I did!
